When Rosie Paulik was a child heading off to summer camp, her dad, Buz Ecker, began writing her letters every single day. He kept up the practice through her college years and even after she moved back home to Cincinnati.
But this past July, she noticed her retired father had become “aimless” and she could tell “he wasn't feeling great.” She thought of a solution. She posted a TikTok, seeing if anyone would be interested in receiving a handwritten note from her dad. The response was overwhelming. She quickly got over 1,000 requests for letters. Thus, the Dad Letter Project was born. Her dad, who is spending the summer in Michigan, was immediately on board. But she realized he might need help in accomplishing this task. So, they brought on three additional “Dad Staff Writers” to assist in fulfilling these requests.
To receive a handwritten letter from one of the dads, Paulik said requests can be filled out on their website, where people can include their personal information, and what they would like their letter to focus on.” Requests will be matched with one of the dads who will personally address the letter and fund the stamp and the postage themselves.
The demand has been so great, Buz admits he's still working through thousands of requests. He said each request is different: some are mourning the loss of their own father and others are wanting to hear a funny story. “Sometimes, you just need a dad to remind you that you’re doing great, to offer life advice, or to tell you a joke. It’s like a hug, but on paper,” the project's website said.

In a recent public event in Hong Kong, sign language interpreter Wanzy Lo introduced herself with a distinctive gesture: three fingers placed horizontally (横着地) on her cheek. This was not merely a symbol for a cat lover and also forms the letter “W” for her name. This creative mix gives her a unique sign name in the world of sign language.
Lo, Sign Language Officer of the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, participated in teaching the public to create their own names in sign language during an activity to promote the communication method late last month. She believes sign language is about sharing the full meaning and feelings behind the words to help the deaf audience understand and connect. This skill was key when she interpreted for the Hong Kong Film Awards, a live show. “Film is an art,” Lo says. “So, our work must also be artistic, sharing not just words but the emotions in them.” During songs and moving speeches, she used stronger facial expressions to pull the audience into the moment.
The demand for such skilled interpreters is rapidly growing. Apart from cultural events, sign language is now also used in important government meetings. The role is exceptionally challenging, requiring quick thinking, vast general knowledge, and the ability to perform under the pressure of live television. However, there are not enough interpreters. Currently, there are only just over 50 qualified interpreters in Hong Kong to serve a substantial community, a number that highlights the serious shortage of workers.
Timmy Chan, head of the Sign Language Center of the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, says, “Sign language interpreters are an important bridge between people with hearing loss and the outside world.” And he hopes that more people will join the ranks of sign language interpretation so that those with hearing disabilities can benefit.

Better Connectivity Increases Reef Abundance
Research led by the University of Oxford has found that the movement and exchange of water between different parts of the ocean — oceanographic connectivity — is a key influence for fish abundance (丰富性) across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The findings have been published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
In the study, connectivity had a special impact on plant-eating reef (礁石) fish groups, which offer several key benefits to reefs. For example, they eat seaweeds that compete with corals (珊瑚). This shows that decision-makers should add connectivity to ocean protected area management across countries. It is especially important in the human-pressured WIO region. Most coral reefs there may face yearly coral bleaching (白化) by the middle of the century, even under optimistic climate change models. Protecting reefs is necessary in this area, especially for local communities. They rely heavily on reefs: small-sized fisheries provide up to 99% of their protein and about 82% of their household income. As the population grows fast, locals face more and more risks from climate change. It could destroy reefs through coral bleaching.
The researchers developed a map of oceanographic connectivity to simplify complex oceanographic models. Typically, across the study reef sites, medium connectivity levels were associated with higher fish abundance, rather than high levels. High connectivity may help with the spread of coral seaweeds but can come with side effects, such as increased foreign species.
Lead author Michael Bonsall added, “Our work emphasizes how crucial this link is between ocean currents and fish ecology for understanding the broader impact of environmental change and fishing rules on sensitive coral reef fish systems.”
The researchers now plan to explore the impacts of human activities and find out how environmental and oceanographic factors are predicted to change under different climate change models, and how fish abundance will be affected.
