Last spring, our school organized a tree-planting event at a nearby barren hill. To be honest, when I first signed up, I thought it would just be a simple, fun day out. I imagined us digging a small hole, dropping a seedling in, and we’d be done. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The reality was much tougher. The sun was beating down, and the soil was hard and rocky. My hands were sore from digging, and sweat poured down my face. For a moment, I felt like giving up. The task seemed daunting. But then I looked around. Everyone was working just as hard. My classmates were encouraging each other, sharing water, and working in teams to break through the tough ground. Our teacher, Mr. Li, whose shirt was wet with sweat, was right there with us, showing us the proper way to plant the seedlings to ensure they would survive.
We worked for hours, and by the end of the day, we had planted over two hundred saplings (树苗). Looking at the rows of tiny trees standing proudly on the once-empty hillside, I felt a sense of accomplishment I had never experienced before. It was a feeling far greater than winning a video game or getting a high score in a test.
That day, I learned that making a real difference requires effort and teamwork. It’s not about one grand action, but about many small, consistent efforts. We were more than just planting a tree; we planted hope for a greener future. And more importantly, the experience planted a seed of responsibility in my own heart. I understood that we are all caretakers of our planet, and every small act counts.
24.What did the author think of the tree-planting event at first

A.Skills in teamwork and leadership.
B.An appreciation for the beauty of nature.
C.The chance to win an award from the school.
D.A sense of responsibility and accomplishment.
27.What message does the author mainly want to convey
A.Teamwork can make any difficult task easier.
B.Planting trees is important for the environment.
C.Challenges can be overcome through effort and teamwork.
D.Outdoor activities are more valuable than classroom learning.

Creating a running route (路线) is not easy, especially in a city like San Francisco: you’ve got to find somewhere safe and avoid crowds. One runner in the city, however, is making things even more complicated (复杂的) — with beautiful results.
For the past four years, Lenny Maughan has been turning his routes into art. His paths through the city are carefully chosen so that, viewed on a map, they form images (图像) of everything from a simple hand to a spaceship. So far he’s made 53 works — including, most recently, an unmistakable image of the artist Frida Kahlo that hit the headlines on social media.
Maughan didn’t set out to be a running artist. But as route-tracking apps became popular, runners began to notice images in their pathways, “kind of like a Rorschach test”, he said. The immediate impulse (心血来潮) among many runners was, of course, to draw heart shapes: “That’s where it all began,” he said. “But I wanted to do something innovative and something original.”
His first project was the Vulcan hand gesture from Star Trek. “I just printed out a paper map and drew a hand shape along Market Street and the other fingers and wrist came pretty easily,” he said. Next up was a television, in the area that helped give birth to the. TV set, followed by a giant Batman logo covering much of the city.
Maughan has lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and many of his images happen to have a connection to the region. He has run in the shape of California; the famous guitarist Jerry Garcia’s hand; and a firefighter’s helmet, to honor heroes amid wildfires. His goal is to create images anyone can recognize: “This is just a way to make the streets my own.”
28.What do we know about Maughan
A.His map drawing has attracted the public.
B.His art has greatly changed San Francisco.
C.His running paths make him known online.
D.His works are praised by artist Frida Kahlo.
29.What does the underlined word “innovative” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Difficult. B.Creative. C.Popular. D.Useful.
30.Which can best describe Maughan’s running projects
A.Freely-chosen and educational. B.Easily-finished and unmistakable.
C.Digitally-designed and promising. D.Carefully-planned and meaningful.
31.What can be learned from the last paragraph
A.San Francisco offers the safest environment.
B.Maughan’s artworks are inspired by San Francisco.
C.The city roads will be under Maughan’s ownership.
D.San Francisco benefits from Maughan’s running art.
D
If your day starts with a harsh alarm sound, you might want to rethink your wake-up routine. New research from the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing suggests that the way you’re waking up could be putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake — like by a loud phone alarm — can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. This happens when your body is suddenly shifted from sleep to wakefulness. And it was found to be 74% higher in participants who were awakened by an alarm after five hours of sleep compared to those who woke up naturally. And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular (心血管的) risks, including stroke and heart attack.
The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic (交感神经) nervous system — the same system that sets off the “fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds.
The good news There are better, healthier ways to greet the day. Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods — and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin (褪黑激素) production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.
There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder, helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds — like a song you can sing along with — help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can last for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day, and your heart will thank you for it!
32.What physical symptoms can be caused by activating the sympathetic nervous system
A.Nervousness and tiredness. B.Slower heartbeat.
C.Improved sleep quality. D.Natural wakefulness.
33.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A.How melatonin affects our sleep quality.
B.The introduction and benefits of gradual light alarms.
C.The importance of getting enough sleep every night.
D.The dangers of using traditional alarm clocks.
34.What can be inferred from the research findings mentioned in the text
A.Gradual waking methods may lower the risk of heart related diseases.
B.Loud alarms are the primary cause of strokes and heart attacks worldwide.
C.Reducing melatonin production immediately improves cardiovascular health.
D.People who wake up naturally never experience morning blood pressure surges.
35.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To persuade us to stop using alarms.
B.To criticize modern sleep habits.
C.To recommend gentler wake-up methods.
D.To compare different types of alarm sounds.

How to write a movie review
Whether a movie is a dull or a brilliant work of art, if people are watching it, it’s worth critiquing (评论). Writing a movie review can be an exciting but difficult task. You have to be both a viewer, enjoying the performance, and a critic, analyzing the production. 36
Do some background research. It will be valuable to know as much as you can about who worked on the movie. It’s also a good idea to look at reviews for similar movies to know how others have done it.
Take notes as you watch the movie. Before you sit down to watch a film, get your notebook or a computer ready. 37 Taking notes allows you to write down little things you can return to later.
Use plenty of examples to back up your opinions. 38 Describe the way scenes look, the way a certain person acted, camera angles, and so on. You can use dialogue to help you make your points as well.
39 You could treat your review like a formal writing task, but it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually funny, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious and dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique angle and personality — it’s much more entertaining (娱乐的) for the readers.
Revise and rewrite as needed. Read your review carefully, looking for mistakes, awkward phrasing, or others you might want to change. Don’t be afraid to make major revisions. 40 . If it makes the review better, then take this opportunity to improve your work.
A.Give it some personality.
B.Be creative and interesting.
C.This is where taking notes really pays off.
D.If you take notes the first time, focus on the plot.
E.You might decide to remove or rewrite an entire paragraph.
F.But with the proper methods, you can create a well-written one.
G.Movies are long, and you can easily forget details or major points.

When I landed in a small town in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thought I was ready for everything — new faces, language barriers, strange social patterns and even homesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel out of place.
Luckily, the Wilsons, my host family, did everything they could to help me settle in — driving me around, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese food. With their warmth and support, everything seemed to fall into place.
But at school, small moments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In our first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway story. Everyone jumped in actively, while I struggled to speak up. My desk-mate encouraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I nodded, forcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I found myself in another cultural trap, Mrs. Wilson’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered politely but kept mostly to myself. Mrs. Wilson noticed my silence and gently asked, “You alright, sweet girl You’ re so quiet tonight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cold, rather than polite
That night, restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged. Questions flooded my mind, none with answers.
A few days later, our teacher announced there would be a Culture Festival next week. “You’ ll prepare a stand to share your own culture — food, crafts, customs ... anything meaningful. You can not only display your culture but also make it interactive, allowing people to try new things, learn traditional skills. or share stories and cultural symbols,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frozen, mind racing: how could I share my traditions in English The thought made my stomach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparations, until the day finally came.

At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready. Taking a deep breath, I once again neatly arranged all the well-prepared items: red paper and scissors. Soon, students and teachers gathered, curiosity in their eyes. I welcomed them with a smile and demonstrated: fold, cut, unfold — and a butterfly spread its wings. A wave of surprise rippled through the crowd. Encouraged, I invited a boy to try; his star turned out uneven, yet drew laughter and applause. More joined eagerly, and I moved among them, guiding their hands, praising their efforts and celebrating each creation. When a teacher proudly held up her paper flower, the cheers grew louder. Red pieces fell to the floor, and my confidence, once hidden, shone through every new pattern.
From that day on, my world here started to change. In the hallway, students waved butterflies from my stand and greeted me with bright “Ni hao!” My heart lifted as I waved back. In literature class, I gave voice to my ideas with newfound confidence. My English was not flawless, yet my voice was steady, and instead of silence I saw nods and smiles. After class, a girl asked softly, “Can you show us more about your culture ” Her words lingered in my heart, echoing like a gentle reminder. In that echo, I realized I had not only broken free from cultural shock but also found my place in a shared story — one written by many voices, yet open enough to hold my own.
