Neither people nor buildings last forever, but Chen Lei’s photos can help us remember them. The stories that accompany them also help build a picture of life for future generations to hear and add their own stories, too.

Wuhu’s "Protectors of the Past" Safeguard Heritage with Hands-on Efforts
In Wuhu, a group of volunteers, known as the "Protectors of the Past,"are devoted to preserving the city’s cultural relics.
They restore century-old houses, such as the Ming-style courtyard in the historic district. Also, they repair ancient temples, like the Qing Dynasty-era Lingyan Temple, where they clean murals. To fund these projects, they organize community donation and apply for government support. Additionally, they actively look for lost relics, which are then displayed in public exhibitions at the Wuhu Museum.
Volunteers are welcome to join their monthly restoration days or donate to support their work. Through these hands-on actions, the Protectors ensure Wuhu’s history remains alive for future generations.
