He’d even requested the day off, something he rarely did, and hidden a silver necklace with a tiny star pendant (her favorite symbol) in his jacket pocket. “I’ll be there,” he’d said to Leslie over breakfast, squeezing her hand. “Before the candles are lit.”
The morning of her birthday, Henry finished his early shift and headed home. The sun was setting, painting the sky pink, and he tapped his fingers to a song on the radio, already imagining Leslie’s smile. But as he turned onto Oak Street, a cry for help stopped him. An elderly man had collapsed on the sidewalk, clutching his chest, his wife hovering nearby in panic. Henry’s taxi was the only vehicle in sight. He glanced at his watch—6:15 PM. The party started at 7. He could call an ambulance and leave, but the man’s breath was shallow, his face ashen.
“Sorry, Les,” Henry muttered, throwing open the door. He knelt beside the man, checking his pulse, and reached for his phone. But as he dialed 911, he saw the man’s wife pull a photo from her purse—an older version of the man, grinning with a teenage girl who looked just like Leslie. “It’s her 16th birthday today,” the woman sobbed. “We were on our way to her party.”
Henry’s throat tightened. He looked at the dying man, then at the clock on his dashboard. The seconds ticked by, loud and unforgiving.
