A popular story claims that the Italian adventurer Marco Polo was responsible for introducing pastas(意大利面食) to China. This legend appeals to Italians, but if you ask Jen Lin-Liu, she is unlikely to agree.
In her latest book, On the Noodle Road, Lin-Liu records a six-month journey along the historic Silk Road from eastern China, through central Asia, and eventually arriving in Europe, in search of the true origin of pastas.
As Lin-Liu tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer, the story of pastas traveling from West to East was first popularized in 1929 by Macaroni Journal, the official trade journal of American pasta-makers. But this couldn’t possibly be correct.
Lin-Liu tells Linda that China has had a longer tradition of pastas. In the northwestern provinces, she finds women making different pastas that were typical to the region long before Marco Polo arrived in China.
“Some seem like shells and some look like postage stamps,” Lin-Liu recalls in the interview. “Boiled in water, they are served up in spicy lamb or beef soup with bits of green peppers or onions. They’re delicious.”
As she heads further west, she finds that the pastas of China give way to the pierogies of Eastern Europe, and finally, the pastas of Italy.
“Along the way, I come across all kinds of pastas,” says Lin-Liu. “Some people theorized that Ghengis Khan was responsible for carrying them all the way from China through Central Asia, where of course they have mantu, manti and other similar dough parcels (面食包裹物) filled with spiced meat or cheese.”
“But who does pastas best ” Linda asks.
“I don’t think that there’s a straight answer,” Lin-Liu admits. “At both ends of the Silk Road, you can see improvements that you don’t really see in the central part of the route.”
But this diversity along the way is what Lin-Liu believes makes pastas so pleasurable: Not only can they be prepared in such different ways, but they can also be topped or filled with almost anything.
24.Why did Jen Lin-Liu travel along the Silk Road
A.To search for the origin of pastas. B.To find materials for her next book.
C.To collect the original pasta recipes. D.To follow in the historic figures’ steps.
25.What did Jen Lin-Liu find along the way
A.Pastas served in spicy soup taste better.
B.Countries in Central Asia make better pastas.
C.Mantu and manti are the same to Chinese noodles.
D.Pastas can be made and cooked in different ways.
26.What can be the best title for the text

When Soares was a young boy growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, his family didn’t have the means to pay for extracurricular activities. However, they found a solution by signing him up for a free circus school that aimed to keep him off the streets and out of trouble. It was there that Soares discovered his passion for performance art, including acrobatics, capoeira, acting, and clowning. Ballet never crossed his mind as a practical career option, as ballet wasn’t a noticeable dance form in Brazil at the time.
At the age of 12, Soares began dancing but not in the traditional sense. His older brother was part of a hip-hop street dance group, and Soares started hanging out with them. He soon combined his circus school skills with hip-hop and capoeira to create a unique style that fascinated audiences in Rio.
One day, the head of a Brazilian dance company saw Soares perform and arranged for him to selection for a dance school. He was awarded a scholarship that covered his tuition fees, and he began studying modern dance. However, it wasn’t long before everyone believed that Soares should switch to ballet. He was immediately put on a fast track, attending academic school in the mornings and ballet classes in the evenings.
Soares’ parents were hesitant about their son pursuing ballet as a career. They were worried about his grades and whether ballet would provide him with a stable future. Soares shared their concerns and had never known anyone who pursued ballet professionally.
Despite these reservations, something incredible happened within two years of Soares starting ballet training. He participated in the Paris International Dance Competition and won a silver medal. This achievement was even more impressive considering that most of his competitors had been studying ballet since childhood. After Paris, Soares joined the national ballet company in Brazil and began earning money from his dancing.
Three years later, he went on to win the gold medal at the Moscow International Competition, previously won by legendary ballet dancers like Mikhail Baryshnikov.

[2分]A study published on June 28, 2024, found that consuming coffee might act like a placebo (安慰剂), making drinkers feel ready to tackle the day.
Most coffee drinkers believe their morning cup makes them more alert due to its caffeine. This study aimed to determine if this wakefulness is due to caffeine or the experience of drinking coffee.
“There is a common expectation that coffee increases alertness and psychomotor (精神运动的) functioning,” said study co-author Nuno Sousa. “Understanding the mechanisms can open pathways for exploring factors that may regulate it and its potential benefits.”
The study recruited participants who drank at least one cup of coffee per day. Participants avoided caffeinated drinks for at least three hours before the study. They were interviewed and underwent two functional MRI (fMRI) scans: one before consuming caffeine or coffee and the other 30 minutes after. During the fMRI scans, participants were asked to relax and let their minds wander.
Results showed that connectivity in the default (默认) mode network decreased after drinking coffee or taking caffeine, indicating that both substances made people more prepared to transition from rest to daily tasks. However, coffee increased connectivity in the higher visual network and the right executive control network, involved in working memory, cognitive control and goal-directed behavior. This increase did not occur with caffeine alone, suggesting that to feel alert and ready to go, coffee is more effective than caffeine alone.
“In simple words, the subjects were more ready for action and alert to external stimuli (刺激物) after having coffee,” said co-author Maria Pico-Perez. The specific smell and taste of coffee or the psychological expectation associated with drinking it might contribute to its unique effects.
32.What was the main purpose of the study
A.To compare the effects of coffee with other drinks.
B.To find out potential benefits of coffee.
C.To evaluate the best time to drink coffee.
D.To investigate the source of wakefulness.
33.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.How the study was carried out.
B.How the fMRI scans were applied.
C.What participants noticed during the study.
D.What participants prepared for the study.
34.What did the study find about the effects of drinking coffee on the brain
A.It reduced alertness to external stimuli.
B.It weakened cognitive control networks.
C.It increased connectivity in the default mode network.
D.It boosted connectivity in the higher visual network.
35.What did the researchers suggest might play a role in the unique effects of coffee
A.The type of coffee beans used.
B.The particular smell and flavor of coffee.
C.Individuals’ psychological state.
D.The environment where coffee is enjoyed.

Think back to the last time you shopped for fruits and vegetables. You may have noticed some items labelled with the word “organic”. 36
“Organic” refers to the way food is grown. To be labelled as organic, food production must meet strict guidelines. These can be different depending on where you live. In the United States, organic foods must be grown or raised without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
37 That changed after the Industrial Revolution. During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more.
The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. 38 And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment.
Have you ever compared organic and non-organic foods at the grocery store If so, you know that organic food tend to cost more. This happens for many reasons. Organic farming produces fewer crops. 39 Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up.
Is organic food worth the extra cost Some people believe it is. They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. 40 They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and non-organic food in terms of safety, nutrition, or taste. Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price.
A.Have you ever wondered what that means
B.The cost of production is also usually higher.
C.For most of history, almost all food was organic.
D.Many people are willing to pay more for organic food.
E.Some also think organic foods are naturally more nutritious.

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock. Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend ” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday !
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.

They worked busily, singing and laughing. By noon, the house was tidied up and looked warm and beautiful. Then they started to prepare a simple but delicious lunch for their mother.

The three of them sat around the table, enjoying the cake and the happy moment. Their mother hugged them tightly, saying it was the best birthday she had ever had.
