For nearly 30 years, the Arkansas Cancer Clinic provided life-saving treatment for those who couldn’t always afford it. Patients in Pine Bluff, especially those with limited income, once had to travel more than 50 miles to receive cancer care. Dr. Atiq made it his mission to bring treatment closer to home — and to make it available to everyone. Even when patients couldn’t pay right away — or at all — they were never turned away. He focused only on patient care, leaving the payment details to his office staff.
It wasn’t until Dr. Atiq and his wife started closing the clinic that they reviewed patient accounts more closely. What they found deeply troubled them. Some patients were struggling to make even small payments — $5 or $10 at a time — on large balances that had grown over months or years. While many of his patients had some form of insurance, the cost of cancer treatment often left them with high medical debt. Some were elderly, others were working multiple jobs to stay afloat — even while going through chemotherapy (化疗).
“There has always been an element of concern in my mind about our fellow citizens, fellow human beings having to worry about paying for services when they are sick,” Dr. Atiq said.
That realization led Dr. Atiq to a life-changing decision: He would cancel all remaining debts as a final gift to his patients. Each patient received a personal holiday card from Dr. Atiq that delivered the news. The note thanked them for trusting him with their care and let them know their unpaid bills had been cleared.
The doctor’s cancellation of patient debt wasn’t just a headline — it was a reality for dozens of families. The debts ranged from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. But it wasn’t about the amount for Dr. Atiq and his family. It was about doing the right thing.
“We are fortunate that we didn’t need the money,” he explained. “So we decided to just cancel and give up the debt — and we did.”
24. What did Dr. Atiq’s clinic bring to those patients
A. Financial aid. B. Employment. C. Convenience. D. Medical housing.
25. What does the underlined part “stay afloat” mean in paragraph 2
A. Pay in full. B. Make ends meet.
C. Keep working hard. D. Reject medical bills.
26. What made Dr. Atiq decide to cancel the debt
A. Awareness of his patients’ trouble. B. The financial state of the clinic.
C. The strong demand from the patients. D. His patients’ trust in him.
27. What does Dr. Atiq’s words show in the last paragraph
A. A penny saved is a penny earned. B. Money makes the world go round.
C. A grateful heart is a wealthy heart. D. Rightness carries its own reward.

More trees will cool the climate and control fires, but mainly if planted in hot, wet areas, according to a new UC Riverside (UCR) study. The study, published in Climate and Atmospheric Science, found that tree planting is generally a net positive for the climate because it helps pull warming carbon out of the atmosphere. However, local effects on temperature not related to carbon varied significantly by region. At higher latitudes (纬度), trees could have a slight heating effect, while the opposite is true in hot, wet areas.
“Our study found greater cooling effects from planting in warm, wet regions, where trees grow throughout the year. Trees there not only pull carbon dioxide from the air, they also cool while releasing water vapor,” said study first author and UCR graduate student James Gomez. “It’s not that planting elsewhere doesn’t help — it does — but these warm areas offer the strongest returns per tree.”
These findings mirror the results of an earlier UCR study that shows planting trees could cool the surface of the planet even more than previously expected. While that study factored in the chemical effects of trees interacting with the atmosphere, this study places more emphasis on understanding the physical effects of tree planting.
These effects include “tree sweating”, or transpiration (蒸腾). Tree roots absorb water from the soil, which then travels up through the trunk and into the leaves. When pores (气孔) in the leaves open up so the tree can take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis (光合作用), some of the water in the leaves evaporates into the air. This process cools the air on Earth’s surface and cools the tree, too.
“It’s just like the way sweating cools your body,” Gomez said. “In warm, wet areas, there is constantly water available for trees, and that increases transpiration.”
Trees can also reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the planet’s surface. As they release water vapor, the air can become more humid. More humidity can mean more clouds, and water vapor itself can absorb some sun. Both of these effects reduce the amount of sun that reaches the ground, giving a cooling effect.
28. What does the study reveal about tree planting in different regions
A. Carbon absorption is weaker in high latitudes than hot areas.
B. Climate benefits overall, but temperature effects vary regionally.
C. It is only effective in hot, wet areas and has no benefits elsewhere.
D. It has identical cooling effects regardless of the latitude where trees are planted.
29. How does the transpiration process mainly work
A. By opening leaf pores to let water out.
B. By changing sunlight into food for the tree.
C. By adding water to the air without forming clouds.
D. By pulling water up from the soil through the trunk.
30. Hot, wet areas have the best cooling effect because of ______.
A. more leaf pores and less water in the air
B. constant water supply and slower tree growth
C. greater carbon storage and less sun bouncing back
D. year-round water release and more clouds forming
31. Which is the best title for the text
A. Why All Tree Planting Helps the Climate
B. The Chemistry of Trees: Beyond Carbon Storage
C. Where to Plant Trees for Maximum Climate Benefits
D. Trees and Carbon: A New Look at Forest Climate Effects

During three summer weeks, 20 polar bears closely observed by scientists tried different strategies to maintain energy reserves, including resting, scavenging and foraging (觅食); yet nearly all of them lost weight rapidly: on average around 1 kilogram, or 2.2 pounds, per day.
Usually larger than grizzly bears, adult male polar bears can reach 10 feet in length and weigh 1, 500 pounds compared to grizzly bears’ 8 feet and 800 pounds. To maintain that great mass, polar bears rely on the energy-rich fat of seals (海豹), which they best catch on the ice.
Little has been known about polar bear energy expenditure (消耗) and behavior when confined to land, so researchers used collars with video cameras and GPS to track polar bears summering in the western Hudson Bay region of Manitoba, Canada. They wanted to see what the specialized ice-hunters ate and did during the extended time on land when their preferred seal prey was out of reach. The researchers also weighed the bears before and after the observation period and measured their energy expenditures.
Researchers found a real diversity of bear behaviors and a wide range of energy expenditures. Many of the adult male polar bears simply laid down to conserve energy, burning calories at rates similar to hibernation. Others, actively searched for food, consuming bird and caribou carcasses as well as berries, kelp and grasses.
In all, researchers found a five-fold range in energy expenditure from the adult male that rested 98% of the time to the most active bear that clocked 330 kilometers. Some adult females spent as much as 40% of their time foraging. Yet all that activity didn’t pay off.
The study focused on the southernmost extent of polar bear range in the western Hudson Bay, where climate warming is likely impacting the bears at a faster rate than in other Arctic regions. The polar bear population in the area has already declined by an estimated 30% since 1987.
This study indicates that polar bears across the Arctic are at risk of starvation as the ice-free period continues to grow.
32. What makes seals ideal food for polar bears
A. Their body shapes. B. Their delicious meat.
C. Their energy-rich fat. D. Their sufficient quantity.
33 Why were cameras attached to polar bears
A. To record their numbers. B. To protect them from being hurt.
C. To take photographs for them. D. To observe their behavior on land.
34. What is the characteristic of polar bears’ energy expenditures on land
A. Diverse. B. Motionless. C. Demanding. D. Unpredictable.
35. What may be the primary subject of the study
A. Polar bears’ situation in ice-free period.
B. Climate warming and polar bears’ food variety.
C. Polar bears’ energy expenditure and behavior on land.
D. Polar bears’ population decline due to climate warming.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Self-sabotage (自我阻碍) is nothing new. To help us develop wiser habits, we must first identify what stands in our way. ____36____ That’s why here we will examine those common mental mistakes together, starting with the ones that prevent us from becoming our best selves.
____37____ The most harmful habit is treating the brain as if it’s a fixed tool. Psychologists call this the “fixed mindset” — the belief that ability is natural and cannot be changed. The better alternative, “growth mindset”, treats intelligence as something that can be developed through effort and strategy.
We don’t give our brains enough sleep. ____38____ Skip it, and your performance drops in clear ways — your thinking becomes slow and your decision-making suffers. 24 hours without sleep greatly slows down response time, a clear sign of mental decline. Even small sleep loss harms attention, short-term memory, mood, and judgment.
We fail to provide structure for our brains. ____39____ Without them, we drift without focus, killing any creative spark we hoped to create. A 2021 study found that college students who put things off showed clear drops in mental control and organization.
We put our brains in a bad environment. Finally, we sometimes leave our brains in poor surroundings. It’s like leaving candy on your desk when you’re on a diet: You might resist for a while, but eventually you give in. The same happens with the mind. ____40____
A. Our mental surroundings shape our thinking results.
B. Recognizing these patterns is the first step to improvement.
C. We treat the brain as a fixed tool rather than a muscle to build.
D. Our brains need structure, goals, and deadlines to function well.
E. Regular contact with negative influences impairs cognitive function.
F. Drug abuse can cause serious long-term harm to their brain function.
G. Sleep is when the brain strengthens and processes what it has learned.

It was a sunny autumn morning in Iowa. The cool autumn wind swept across the rolling hills of Iowa City High, where the annual cross-country meet was about to begin. The crowd lined the muddy trail, coaches barked last-minute instructions, and runners warmed up their bodies, their breaths visible in the cool morning air. Among them was Evan Hansen, a quiet but determined sophomore, who had trained for months for this race.
The school coach, Mr. Skay, patted his shoulder and said, “Believe in yourself and run well!”
Evan nodded, “Sure, I will!”
Bang! The race began. Runners surged forward. But after just a few minutes, Evan noticed something odd. Near him was another runner, Adam Todd, from a different school. Adam had epilepsy (癫痫) and autism (孤独症), and sometimes he felt confused in noisy places. Today, the sound of an ambulance made him lose his way. As the race began, Adam turned and walked into the trees.
Evan noticed that Adam was missing. Evan hesitated. He knew the rules: stay on course, keep pace, win the race. But something told him to stop. He stopped running and looked around. Soon, he saw Adam walking alone, looking lost. Evan did not think twice. He turned and ran back.
“Adam!” Evan called out, slowing down. Adam didn’t respond. His eyes were glazed, his steps unsteady. Evan jogged back and gently approached him. “Hey, man, I’m Evan. You’re off the trail. Want me to help you get back ” Adam looked at him, confused but calm. Without waiting for an answer, Evan took his hand—not out of pity, but out of trust.
“I’ll run with you,” Evan said, his voice steady. “Together.”
