What are Comparatives & Superlatives
Comparative (比较级)
Used to compare two things or people.
Example:
Tom istallerthan John.
Superlative (最高级)
Used to compare three or more things or people.
Example:
Tom is thetallestboy in the class.
Forming Comparatives & Superlatives (1)
General Rule (一般情况)
Add-er / -est
fast → faster → fastest
high → higher → highest
Ends with 'e' (以 e 结尾)
Add-r / -st
nice → nicer → nicest
large → larger → largest
Forming Comparatives & Superlatives (2)
Rule 3: Consonant + y
Changey to i, then add-er / -est
happy →happier→happiest

Rule 4: CVC Pattern (Short Words)

Using Comparatives
Comparative Form
A + be/V + 比较级 + than + B
Example: This river is longer than that one.
Equality (as...as)
as + 原级 + as (两者相同)
Example: The Pacific Ocean is as big as we think.
Inequality (not as...as)
not as/so + 原级 + as (前者不如后者)
Example: This hill is not as high as Qomolangma.
Using Superlatives
Structure 1: the + Superlative + in/of + Scope
Mount Qomolangma is thehighestmountaininthe world.
She is themost popularsingerofthe three.
Structure 2: one of the + Superlative + Plural Nouns
The Amazon isone of thelongestriversin the world.
Common Mistakes
Superlative Form (最高级)
Wrong: He is the taller boy in the class.
Right: He is thetallestboy in the class.
Note: 'the' must be used before superlatives (最高级前必须加 the)
Comparative Form (比较级)
Wrong: This book is more interesting as that one.
Right: This book is more interestingthanthat one.
Note: Use 'than' after comparatives (比较级后用 than)

Step 1: Grouping
Start from the right and make a group every three digits, separated by commas.

Practice 1: Answers & Explanation
1. highest (Superlative)
Used to describe the mountain with the greatest altitude. It is the superlative form of 'high'.
2. deepest (Superlative)
Refers to the ocean with the maximum depth. This is the superlative form of 'deep'.
3. big (Positive / as...as)
Used in the structure 'as big as' to make an equal comparison between two objects.
4. longest (Superlative)
Describes the river with the greatest length. It is the superlative form of 'long'.
