Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake and candles. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history.
The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail — a surprising 2,200-mile difficult walk that stretches across 14 states, with climbs and descents equal to climbing Mount Everest 16 times. “You see incredible parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see otherwise,” said Kellenberger. “So much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.”
Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell, where her fascination with the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail from Georgia to Maine, but she could never carve out the uninterrupted six-month period required due to a tight work schedule and family responsibilities. Eventually, she retired and finally had the full six months to spare for the adventure.
The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced dehydration (脱水), falls, and even disease. It was also interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which tore through the eastern United States and compelled her to pause at the southern Virginia border. Determined to finish, she rerouted north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s rocky terrain until the very end.
When she finally reached the end of the trail, the emotions hit hard. “So you’re a basket case,” she laughed. “You have so many emotions because you’re excited about finishing. I was really looking forward to saying,” I am done. “But you also know you’re going to miss this big time. You’re not going to have what you have out on that trail. That peace, the tranquility.”

China’s film market urgently needs a hit to draw audiences back to cinemas after a lackluster (平淡无奇的) few months. And an unexpected candidate looks set to fill that role: the Disney animated comedy Zootopia 2. Hollywood movies have underperformed in China over the past few years, but Zootopia 2 appears on track to break the curse. Its advance ticket sales have already surpassed 249 million yuan (US $35 million) — a record for a foreign animated film in China, according to box office tracker Dengta Data.
“Driven by several imported sequels-Zootopia 2, Demon Slayer and Avatar 3 — the film market in the final two months of 2025 is positioned for a resurgence to match the annual 50 billion yuan box office target,” Chen Jin, a data analyst at Dengta Data, told the China Business Journal. China’s film industry endured a tough 2024. This year, there has been a tentative recovery, with revenues so far this year reaching about 46 billion yuan, according to Maoyan, another ticketing platform. But the total remains well below 2023’s annual box office of 54.9 billion yuan, and the improvement has largely been driven by the success of one film: the domestic animation Ne Zha 2, which grossed a record 15.4 billion yuan after its release in January.
The hope is that imports like Zootopia 2 can revive the industry’s fortunes and-crucially-get young people back into cinemas. The proportion of cinema ticket buyers in China aged under 24 fell below 15 per cent in the first three quarters of 2025, according to data from Beijing-based consultancy Top Century. Zootopia 2 is not the only foreign film attracting attention in China. Avatar: Fire and Ash, set for a December release, is generating real buzz among Chinese viewers over the age of 35, who are old enough to remember the huge success the original Avatar film enjoyed in the country. A research team made up of scientists from Peking University (PKU) and City University of Hong Kong has created a brand-new photonic chip (光子芯片), which helps build an ultra- wideband system (超宽带系统) capable of high-speed wireless signal transmission and flexible frequency adjustment — a world-first achievement that is widely expected to enhance the reliability and efficiency of future 6G networks.
What makes this chip special is its ability to cover an extremely wide frequency range — from 0.5 GHz to 115 GHz. This means a single chip can handle multiple frequency bands that previously required several separate devices. Is transmission speed can go beyond 120 gigabits per second, fast enough to download multiple high-definition movies in just one second.
What makes this chip even more remarkable is its intelligence: it can automatically detect which frequency bands are crowded and switch to less busy ones. “This technology is like building a super-wide highway where electronic signals are vehicles and frequency bands are lanes”, explained Wang Xingjun, deputy dean of the School of Electronics at PKU. Previously, signals were crowded into one or two lanes, but now many lanes are available. If one lane is blocked, signals can switch flexibly to another, ensuring faster and smoother communication, Wang said.
This breakthrough is based on Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (薄膜铌酸锂), a special material that allows the chip to process signals efficiently while reducing power consumption, solving a key problem in the development of practical 6G systems.
Experiments have demonstrated that the system is capable of achieving wireless transmission rates higher than 100 Gbps, which is sufficient to stream 1,000 8K ultra-high-definition videos at the same time. It means that future 6G networks are expected to support advanced applications such as remote surgery and advanced virtual reality, as well as provide connections from the deep sea to outer space. Currently, the research team is aiming to minimize its size, weight and power consumption.
This progress showcases China’s growing strength in next-generation communication technology and brings us one step closer to the 6G era.
