When Shanna, my now 19-year-old daughter, was in Grade 3, her teacher, Mrs. Mathews, gave each of her students a small pot with a bean seed to plant. Green beans are tough and perfect for teaching kids how to grow things. But that little plant ended up teaching me an important lesson, too.
After the beans sprouted and flowered at school, the children were allowed to take them home. Shanna tried to find the perfect location and placed it on a sunny south window sill (窗台) and then proudly declared, "Soon I can feed the whole family!"
Her two sisters were a little jealous, and even our cat seemed interested- which should have been a warning because when I woke up the next morning, I saw that the bean plant had been knocked off the window sill. Its leaves were torn, and the stem was barely attached to the roots. It looked completely destroyed.
I was nervous about telling Shanna, but when I gently said we might have to throw the plant away, her reaction was not what I expected. "It's going to be okay, Mom," she said, with believing eyes and a heart full of hope "The plant will get better!"
Without hesitation, she ran to the bathroom to get the first-aid kit, returning with gauze (纱布), a tongue depressor, bandages, and a deep belief that this almost- dead plant could survive and even grow beans. I wasn't so sure, but I went along with it. Together, we wrapped the broken stem carefully.
A few days later. to my surprise, the plant was standing tall again, and the one bean on it had grown bigger!
