What is a comic strip
A comic strip is a series of pictures drawn inside boxes that tell a story.

A frame is a single picture in a comic strip. A whole comic is made of many frames put together.
A speech bubble shows what the character is saying.
A thought bubble shows what the character is thinking.
A caption is a line of words that can explain a change of place or time.

(Possible answers)
(3) Using a pen from the beginning would be a bad idea because you can’t fix errors. You should use a pencil, not a pen, so you can erase the mistakes.
(5) You don’t always need captions. You should only add them if the story needs them.

(First part)
A comic strip is a series of drawings with a small amount of text. The pictures are called frames, and each of them tells a part of the story. A comic strip may have one or many frames.
The story is also told with speech bubbles and thought bubbles. In speech bubbles, we can see what the characters say, and thought bubbles show what they think. Speech bubbles and thought bubbles help us understand the story more easily.
There is sometimes a line of words called a “caption” at the top or bottom of a frame. Captions are used to explain a change of place or time.
Now, look at the comic strip. Can you find a frame, a speech bubble, a thought bubble and a caption in it
Listen again and pay attention to the words you didn’t catch.

(Second part)
Next, you are going to learn how to make your own comic strip.
Step 1: Write ideas
First, decide what story you want to tell. Make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end. Write down your ideas.
Step 2: Draw frames
Then, draw three frames on a clean piece of paper, using a pencil and a ruler. You can mark where the speech bubbles and thought bubbles will go.
Step 3: Draw characters
Now, it’s time to draw your characters! If you are not good at drawing, you can use basic shapes. You can even use stick figures. Use a pencil so that you can erase any mistakes.
Step 4: Add text
Next, add text in the speech bubbles and thought bubbles. Add captions if necessary. Don’t forget to double-check your spelling.
Step 5: Add details
Now, go back to your characters and add details such as facial expressions and movement lines.
Step 6: Finish the work
Finally, use a pen to go over your pencil drawings and rub out any pencil lines. Your three-frame comic strip is finished. Hooray!
Listen again and pay attention to the words you didn’t catch.
Post-listening: Think–Group–Share
Imagine you are comic book artists. A reporter is interviewing you. Explain the process of making a comic strip to the reporter. In groups of six, take turns explaining the steps of making a comic strip. You can write each step down before sharing.
