The passive in the simple present

Big animated films like Ne Zha 2 (2025) are not easy to make.
The characters and the backgrounds are drawn by thousands of artists. Digital tools are used to make the films. A lot of other tasks also need to be done. The music and sound effects are created. The dialogue is recorded too.
In the end, all the hard work is worth it—these films are loved by people of all ages.

In traditional animation, each character is drawn by hand.
The backgrounds are often painted with watercolours.
Nowadays, most animated films are not drawn by hand. Digital tools are used instead.

Let’s sum up the rules!
Look!
We use am, is, are + past participle to form the passive in the simple present.
When we want to say who or what does something, we can add a phrase with by in the passive sentence.
The mistakes are erased by the artist.
1. 直接 + -ed

2. 以e结尾的,直接 + -d

Work in pairs and talk about how to make an animated film. Use passive sentences in the simple present.

Look around the classroom. What do you see Think about the objects (e.g. the board, the chairs). In groups, each member writes a sentence about something you see using the passive in the simple present.
As a group, read your sentences to each other. Correct any mistakes. Then choose one member to share your group’s best sentences with the class.

Write about your favourite comic strip and explain why you like it. Remember to use the passive in the simple present. Then share it with your partner.

Animation is the process of creating moving images and it is described by people as “the state of being alive”.
Animations are enjoyed by both adults and children.
Lots of drawings are used by animators to make the images look like they are moving.
