Impressionism
The development of Western art slowed until the invention of photography① in the mid-19th century. After that, paintings were no longer needed to preserve② what people and the world looked like.Hence, painters had to find a new way of looking at their art. From this,Impressionism emerged③ in France. The name of this new movement came from the painting by Claude Monet (1840—1926) called Impression,Sunrise. In this work,Monet's aim was to convey④ the light and movement in the scene—the subjective impression the scene gave him—but not a detailed record of the scene itself.
While many Impressionists painted scenes of nature or daily life, others, such as Renoir (1841—1919),focused on⑤ people.[1] Unlike the cold,black-and-white photographs of that time period,Renoir's paintings are full of light, shadow, colour, and life.He sought to⑥ show not just the outer image of his subjects, but their inner warmth and humanity as well.[2]

A
Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017,one of his paintings was sold for $81 million.2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh's year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U.S.cities regarding his works. It's very surprising to know he sold only one painting in his lifetime, for only little profit (利润).How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death? It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away, who had expected to make his brother's works well-known.Fortunately,Theo's wife Johanna van Gogh-Bonger,as an English teacher at two different girls' schools before her marriage, was left with their son and a sizable art collection. She decided to help Theo's wishes come true.“During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent's art and letters,” says Luijten, author of Johanna's Lifetime Story.
Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh's name.To do this, she chose some of his works to sell and encouraged writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she met with frequent refusal.Johanna didn't lose heart. She lent some pieces to well-known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales.“One of Johanna's major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1905,where she collected no less than 484 of Van Gogh's works.A Van Gogh exhibition of this size would never again be matched,” Luijten explains.Another particular move happened in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh's letters.Theo had kept hundreds of letters.“This was of great importance,as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further,” says Luijten.
“There's little doubt that although Van Gogh was great,he wouldn't be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna,” says Luijten.

Every year in May,art galleries and museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo Da Vinci, who died in France on May 2,1519.He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P which, they think,is Da Vinci's earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images (图像),not one.One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5,1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old.It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off.Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “Mirror-writing”.It's a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said,“Leonardo was born left-handed,but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age.By looking at his writings, including from this drawing,we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list.It will be part of an exhibit at Italy's Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director,Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo's drawing technique and his abilities in writing.
