My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh, with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched① the unending sand dunes that marked the beginning of the Sahara.[1] A small boy walked past with a group of noisy goats as I took a long look at the yellow roadside sign that told us we were entering a “fragile② natural environment”.I made a resolution③ to respect and protect this unique landscape while I was here.We set off,our vehicle quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn't long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes towering④ above us on all sides.[2]The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down⑤ hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before.[3] The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal⑥ itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening⑦ at the same time. The colours of the dunes contrasted strikingly with the blue of the cloudless sky.

CLIMBING QOMOLANGMA:WORTH THE RISKS
1 Last year, hundreds of people spent good money① on an experience that they knew would include crowds②,discomfort③and danger[1].Many would become sick, due to the extreme cold and low air pressure④,and a few would even lose their lives⑤.Yet,despite all this,by the end of the trip many were already planning to return. For these people, climbing Qomolangma[2]is an experience like no other⑥,making some feel weak and others,powerful[3].
[1]that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词an experience,that在从句中作宾语。

[11]with复合结构作状语,其中the majority of attempts是宾语,to climb Qomolangma是动词不定式短语作后置定语,修饰attempts;因attempts与result in之间是逻辑上的主谓关系,故这里用动词-ing形式。

6 Research also suggests that [14]our desire to seek risks[15] can be connected to how much we expect to benefit from the result.

Guilin offers colorful outdoor activities for adults and kids.Touring the karst countryside of Yangshuo by bike, hiking Longsheng's rice terraces (梯田),cruising along the Li River, and visiting minority villages offer so much breathtaking scenery and new experiences that no kid could be bored!Visiting the local market and learning to cook a Chinese dish are also fun.
In a hot summer, you could have fun with stand-up paddle boarding to enjoy the cool water, explore a wild cave without colored lights, and jump into the natural and crystal pools.

In 1880,fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson was fascinated by the tales of sailors' exciting lives at sea.One day he set out on the forty-mile journey to the nearest large port to seek work on a sailing ship.
In Baltimore,Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years,Henson sailed around the world.By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885,Henson was well-educated,thus becoming an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else,Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington,D.C.One day in 1887,a man came in to buy a hat.The man,Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea.Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S.government.He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee's skills and experience on ocean voyages,so he introduced Peary to Henson.Henson and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their love of the sea.
Using his map-reading and sailing skills,Henson proved himself to be a worthy and intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream:to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole.He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole each time.
In 1908,Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old.The years of hardship and suffering in extreme cold had taken their toll on both men. This would be their last chance.
In April 1909,Henson's instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole.Together Henson and Peary planted an American flag in the snow. They were greatly honored for their achievement.Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes' graves not far apart at Arlington National Cemetery.
