One day when I was 15 years old, I was making food in the kitchen. My brother came in. He placed his beef next to my thick one and said, “Courtney, your beef is bigger than mine. You don’t need to eat; you’re too fat.” Then he walked out laughing. From then on, I was unwilling to wear shorts until I was 30 years old. For the next 15 years, I spent summer after summer roasting in long pants.
But then I met Ragen Chastain. I couldn’t believe that this almost 300-pound woman who, like myself, was so energetic and happy in her own skin. I listened as she shared her own journey to recovery and self-love. She talked about how amazing our bodies are, simply because of the things they do every day — like breathing, pumping blood to every cell and walking.
Walking! I suddenly realized how foolish I’d been for so long. There are people who are born without legs, or who lack properly working legs, or who lose their legs, and I’d been hiding my perfectly strong, healthy and beautiful legs in shame. The next day, I bought three pairs of shorts and a sundress and spent the entire summer letting my legs see the sun and feel the breeze.

There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, “Paper or plastic ” Well, which type of bag would you choose
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment it has long been supposed that paper bags are better. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment-friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théatre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney — an artificial intelligence(AI) system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts (提示).
Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25, along with pictures of his three entries. It spread quickly on social media days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece,” one user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution (分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that debates over whether AI can be used to make art are getting so much attention. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
