English Week: A chance for students to shine
Last week, students at Yangguang Junior High School worked hard to make their English Week a big success. This year’s theme was “promoting cultural exchange”.
There were a number of events and activities during the week. There was an English book fair and a treasure hunt. Some students took part in a speaking competition. They spoke for two minutes on a topic of their choice, and there were wonderful speeches about recent technological developments in China and abroad. Other students put on an English play. They designed the costumes themselves and had great fun acting in the play.
One of the most popular activities was a poster design competition. We spoke to the winner, Zhang Xin. “I’m so happy I won,” he said. “I made a poster about the Silk Road. It was great to learn about this important network of trade routes between China and Europe.”
We spoke to several other students about English Week. One of them was Su Mei. “It gave me a chance to learn about other parts of the world, and it has really helped me improve my English speaking skills. I didn’t know that learning could be this fun!”
The teachers were all very happy with the result. “English Week is a great opportunity for students: they get to take part in fun activities, practise using English and acquire valuable cultural knowledge at the same time,” said a teacher. “No wonder everyone is looking forward to next year’s event!”

此句为文章的总起句,简要交代了活动的时间、地点、人物、事件及结果。不定式结构 to make their English Week a big success 作目的状语,“make sb. / sth. + 名词”为固定短语搭配,表示“使某人或某物变得 / 成为……”。本句意为:“上周,阳光初级中学的学生努力让他们的英语周取得了圆满成功。”
They spoke for two minutes on a topic of their choice, and there were wonderful speeches about recent technological developments in China and abroad.
