In a remarkable engineering achievement, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, now

officially the world’s tallest bridge, has opened to traffic in the mountainous province of Guizhou,
southwest China. Rising 625 meters above the Beipan River, the bridge deck stands twice as high
as the Eiffel Tower and nearly nine times the height of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. This
bridge stretches 2,890 meters in total length across the deep Huajiang Grand Canyon, which is
often referred to as the “Earth’s crack”. Its main span of 1,420 meters also makes it the world’s
largest spanning bridge built in a mountainous area. The bridge slashes the travel time between the
two sides of the canyon from two hours to just two minutes, significantly improving local
connectivity.
The construction of the bridge, which began in 2022 and was completed in September
2025, is a testament to China’s advanced infrastructure (基础设施) capabilities. To ensure its
structural safety, engineers conducted a final load test before its opening. In this important test,96
trucks, weighing a total of about 3,300 tons, were driven onto the bridge in groups. To overcome
challenges posed by complex geological conditions, and strong winds in the canyon, engineers
employed innovative (创新的) technologies. The project successfully secured 21 authorized
patents (专利), with its technical advances contributing to national standards for future bridge
construction.
Guizhou Province, is already home to over 30,000 bridges. The previous record holder for
the world’s tallest bridge, the Beipanjiang Bridge (565 meters high), is also in Guizhou and lies
just about 60 km away from the new bridge. More than just a transportation link, the Huajiang
Grand Canyon Bridge is expected to be a boost for regional economic development. By reducing
travel time, it will promote trade and tourism. The bridge is also planned to combine with cultural

Set achievable goals.
Setting goals that are too difficult can lead to frustration and low self-esteem. Instead, set
small, realistic goals. 18 For example, if you’re shy about speaking in public, start with
joining a small discussion group. When you achieve these small goals, you’ll gain a sense of
accomplishment and become more confident to take on bigger challenges.
Face your fears.
Fear is one of the biggest barriers to self-confidence. 19 If you’re afraid of
failing a test, prepare thoroughly and take practice exams. If you’re scared of meeting new people,
force yourself to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Each time you face your fear and
survive, your confidence will grow stronger.

But something inside me refused to let go of my dream. I knew that if I gave up now, all my
hard work would be for nothing, which was something I couldn’t bear to think about. So, I held on
to my dream with every ounce of strength I had left. I did rehabilitation exercises every day,
hoping to recover as soon as possible. I also watched golf videos which recorded my past training
moments, reminding myself that I would stand on the course again one day. I believed that with
my determination and perseverance, I could overcome any obstacle that stood in my way.
Finally, after a long and painful treatment, I beat the disease. When I finally returned to the
golf course, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I knew
that the road ahead would still be tough, but I was ready to face whatever challenges came my
way. I continued to train hard, and gradually, my skills began to improve. I was no longer the
struggling professional golfer I once was; I was a fighter who had overcome adversity and was
ready to take on the world once again.
