But when you sneeze, that is exactlywhat is happening. Sneezing helps you protect yourself from thingslike germs, dust, and smoke. In fact, it is the body's way of getting ridof things that may harm you.2 People cannot really control their sneezes. If something starts ticklingthe inside of our nose, our brain takes over. It knows that somethinginside the nose should not be there, so it sends a message to the bodyto get it out.3 When we sneeze, many things happen in a very short time. Usually, our eyes shut, our tongue presses against the top of our mouth, andthe muscles in our stomach and chest get tight. Next, there is asudden blast of air coming out of our lungs and then our nose. Asthe air goes out our nose, it carries germs, dust, and tiny drops ofwater with it.4 Some unusual things can also make us sneeze. For example, somepeople sneeze when they look at a bright light. If people have anallergy, certain plants or animals might also make them sneeze. Ifthey are allergic to certain plants, they might sneeze a lot in theseasons when the plants bloom, but not in others. If they are allergicto dogs or cats, they usually cannot have one as a pet.5 While sneezing is good for the person doing it, it can be very badfor the people nearby. Sneezing is one way that diseases spread.Millions of germs from one sneeze can travel up to about 8metres at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour! These germs canstay in the air, and if other people breathe in those germs, theycan get sick too.6 If you sneeze, always cover your nose and mouth. After that, make sure to wash your hands.
