A recent report on London’s public transport reveals mixed results for the last year. Key
areas of passenger volume, revenue (收益) , and customer feedback showed distinct trends.
Passenger numbers saw a strong overall increase of 8. 5%, reaching 1. 32 billion journeys.
The city’s underground, which increased to 850 million journeys, led this growth with a 10% rise.
In contrast, bus usage continued a slight decline, falling by 2%.
Financially, the system performed well. Total revenue reached 3. 56 billion, a 12%
in-crease. A notable trend was the 25% increase in other revenue, such as the revenue from
advertising, now making up 18% of total income. This indicated success in diversifying funding
sources.
However, customer complaints rose by 9% across the network. Bus services were the main
concern, with complaints up by 15%, often about the frequency and cleanliness. On a positive
note, the tram (有轨电车) improved its service, cutting complaints by 10%.

Last November, I stood victorious atop my forty-sixth Adirondack peak, having completed
my goal to climb them all again in less than a year. The view from Keene Valley was
breathtaking. I shared this moment with my husband Mike and friends Emily and Katie-Jean, who
had joined me for the climb up Dial and Nippletop Mountains. After taking photos with the help
of a friendly fellow hiker, we began our descent, choosing a steeper, shorter trail to beat the dusk.
The path was treacherous, covered in a sheet of ice. I led the way, using spikes on my boots
for grip. Suddenly, a sharp cry shattered the calm— Mike had fallen. Rushing back, I saw him on
the ground and his right foot was bent at a horrifying angle. He had slipped and heard a sickening
crack. Katie-Jean, a physical therapist, skillfully used my hiking pole and a shirt to splint (用夹板
夹) his ankle, but we knew carrying him down was impossible.
My phone had no signal. Hope came from the hiker who had taken our photo earlier; his

phone worked near the summit. I climbed back up, called 911, and guided a receptionist to our
remote location. A forest ranger (护林员) was sent, but we faced a long, cold wait as the sun
began to set, with Mike in growing pain.
Finally, the ranger arrived and coordinated an urgent airlift. As a helicopter approached, she
instructed us to cut small trees down so Mike could be safely lifted. About an hour later, we
cleared the trees. Watching him being slowly lifted in the rescue basket was a moment of immense
relief and gratitude.
This successful rescue was a powerful reminder: My greatest strength came not from
personal achievement, but from the community that rallied around us— friends, a stranger, a
ranger, and the emergency team. True peace was found not in summit views, but in knowing we
were not alone in our time of need. Hiking out in the dark, though weary, I felt supported, already
thinking of reuniting with Mike at the hospital.

27.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.The rescue procedure. B.The support from strangers.

Millions of young birds die from extreme heat in American farm fields, a growing threat
from climate change that may harm bird populations, researchers say.
Young birds often lose their lives due to lack of water and problems with body temperature
control, especially when they grow up in open nests or bird boxes in unshaded farm fields across
America. Their survival also relies on adult birds’ ability to find food and care for the nest, but
extreme heat makes it hard for adult birds to fly around and look for food, slowing down their care
for the young.
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
“We know that changing land for farming is already affecting biodiversity and species
health on farms, ” said Katherine Lauck, a Ph. D. candidate in ecology at UC Davis and co-lead
author of the study. “When you combine that with extreme heat linked to climate change, it’s
creating some unique conditions that birds did not develop with. Fundamentally, this is about
whether nestlings survive or not.”
Published in the journal Science, the study adds to more research on climate change’s
effects on birds, which scientists see as signs of environmental decline. Since 1970, North
America’s breeding adult birds have dropped by 30%— nearly 3 billion birds— due to habitat
loss, lack of food, enemy attacks and bird collisions with buildings. But extreme heat is making
young birds more endangered.
The researchers found that in unshaded farms, which are 10 ℃ hotter than nearby forests,
adult birds have much lower breeding mon birds like western bluebirds and tree
swallows are more easily hurt by heat, especially those in open nests instead of tree holes. The
study used 152, 000 nesting records from Nest Watch, a program where volunteers have
monitored birds’ eggs, behaviors and young birds for 23 years.
“This suggests that the birds already in decline may have greater difficulty raising young in
the future, which could have serious consequences for the survival of these species,” said Daniel
Karp, who led the data collection. Conor Taff from Cornell Lab of Ornithology noted the study’s
nationwide scale provides a valuable foundation for further research on more bird species.
28.What can we know about the young birds’ living environment
A.It’s tough. B.It’s stable.
C.It’s competitive. D.It’s harmonious.
29.What impact has changing land for farming had on young birds
A.It improves their nests. B.It threatens their survival.
C.It reduces their uniqueness. D.It increases their food resources.
30.How was the study conducted
A.By tracking birds’ forest nests. B.By doing lab temperature tests.
C.By using the long-term records. D.By surveying adult birds’ diets.
31.What is Daniel Karp’s attitude to the future of the species in danger
A.Indifferent. B.Positive. C.Uncertain. D.Concerned.

In New York City (NYC) , officials are adopting advanced new technology to make the
city’s streets quieter, and they have equipped special cameras integrated with radar sound
col-lectors that can detect vehicles like cars and trucks emitting too much noise to catch drivers
who are breaking the city’s noise rules.
Up to now, at least 71 individuals have been fined for having vehicles that make too much
noise, and the city intends to expand the application of this technology to more areas, as an official
pointed out that some cars installed with illegal components can produce extremely loud sounds,
which has evolved into a more severe problem in recent years, so he advocates the adoption of this
new radar technology.
When the devices detect a noise-polluting vehicle, they will record its license plate number,
after which the owner will receive a fine by mail; the first fine is $800, and if a driver accumulates
three fines without appearing in court, he or she may be required to pay a maxi-mum fine of $2,
625.
Why is stopping noise so crucial Studies reveal that noise can affect more than just our
hearing. It can alter our mood, impair our mental health, and be associated with a higher risk of
heart disease and hypertension, as another official stated that noise pollution hinders sleep and
may give rise to long-term or chronic diseases.
Nevertheless, some people in the city say the government’s efforts to quiet loud vehicles
have gone too far. Phillip Franklin, a car enthusiast in the city, launched an online protest against
them, arguing that noise is a part of daily life in NYC and that quiet cars may pose a danger to
inattentive walkers, and he holds the view that the city should prioritize repairing road potholes
(坑洼) rather than focusing on noisy vehicles.
Even though new technology and rules have been adopted, it remains extremely difficult to
make a large city completely quiet, so many New Yorkers have simply adapted to living with
noise, and as one researcher commented, the city is active and lively, and people appreciate it in
this way.
32.Why is the technology adopted
A.To repair road potholes. B.To monitor the city’s noise.

33.What does paragraph 4 intend to do
A.Introduce a new argument. B.Give some relative examples.
C.Explain the operating principle. D.Add some background information.
34.What can we learn from adopting the technology
A.It eliminated noise totally. B.It faces some opposition.
C.It is supported by drivers. D.It extended to the whole NYC.

The school’s annual tech contest was announced. I read the poster carefully, feeling
ex-cited. At lunch, I found my friends Lewis and Sarah in the cafeteria. “Look at this contest,” I
said, showing them the notice. “What if we try to build a robot together One that can help
people.” Lewis was interested right away, while Sarah asked many thoughtful questions a-bout
how it might work. After a long discussion, we finally agreed on a goal: to build a robot that could
carry small objects, hoping it might one day assist those who need help.
We started full of hope, buying motors, wires, and wheels. However, the step— making the
robot move— stopped us completely. The motors became hot quickly, and the wheels just
wouldn’t turn together. After three long afternoons of failed tries, Lewis dropped his tools on the
worktable. “This is impossible,” he said in a low voice. “Maybe we should pick an easier project.”
Sarah stayed quiet, but her worried face showed she felt the same.
Seeing them so discouraged, I knew I had to do something. “Remember why we star-ted,” I
said, trying to sound confident. “We wanted to build something useful. Let’s not give up yet.” I
suggested we split the work: Sarah and I would search the library and Internet for solutions, while
Lewis would talk to Mr. Davis, our science teacher, whom I had already asked for permission to
consult.
Mr. Davis’s help was the turning point. He didn’t just give us answers; he taught us how to
find them. In his laboratory, he looked at our messy wiring and smiled. “The problem is here,” he
said, pointing to where the motor wires connected to the battery. “They are loose, causing a short
circuit and heat.” He patiently showed us the right way to connect and secure them. Meanwhile,
Sarah and I found a clear online video about motor control. We took de-tailed notes and brought
everything back to the team.

M: Hi, I’d like to tell you about the Valley Car Share Project. It’s a car sharing system for
university staff and students. We have got 20 vehicles. Anyone over the age of 18 with a driving
license can join the project. Once you’ve applied for our annual membership, we’ll send you what
we call a key card. Each time you want to use a car, you’ll need to make a booking. You can do
this in person at our office in the Office Building, or by phone, but we would like to receive these
by email as it’s quicker and easier for us to put your booking through our system. When it comes
to finding the cars, our main garage is on Hillway Avenue. It’s just be-hind the baseball field, to
the east of the library. It costs $30 to apply to join the project. You’ll also have to pay $50 a year
for annual membership fee. There’s also an hourly or daily fee to pay when you use the car. It’s

Dear Lucy,
Last Friday, I took part in the English speech contest held by the school, whose topic was
“Technology and Human Connection”. The contest not only challenged me to organize my ideas
logically but also encouraged me to reflect deeply on modern life.
During the five-minute presentation, though my heart was pounding, I tried to express my
points clearly while maintaining eye contact with the audience. What truly inspired me was the
supportive atmosphere, especially when I noticed many listeners nodding in agreement.
Through this experience, I’ve learned that effective communication requires both thorough
preparation and genuine passion. It was a valuable opportunity that has significantly boosted my
confidence in public speaking. I’d love to hear about your recent activities too!

With Mr. Davis’s guidance and our new research, we tried again. We re-wired every-thing,
checked every connection, and wrote a simple control program. On our seventh at-tempt, on a
quiet Friday after school, I held my breath and pressed the start button. This time, the wheels not
only turned but also moved forward smoothly. For a second, we were all silent. Then Sarah
clapped; Lewis let out a loud cheer; and we all laughed with relief and joy. We then tested its
other functions, and all of them worked perfectly.
The contest day was busy and noisy. Many amazing projects surrounded us. When it was our
turn, my hands felt cold. I carefully placed a small box in front of our robot. With a soft whirring
sound, its arm reached out, picked up the box steadily, turned, and placed it perfectly into Sarah’s
waiting hands. The whole process was quiet and exact. We saw the judges nod and write notes.
Later, when the headmaster called our names for the first prize, we could hardly believe it. We
walked to the stage proudly, holding the robot that proved hard work and teamwork could make
an idea real.
