Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said
putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said: “I’ve waited a long
time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an
advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near
Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the
minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford
ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a
living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her
mother held two cleaning jobs. Nonetheless, she harboured her dream of being a

Every year, around 2,000 large sea animals, such as whales, die by swimming
onto a beach or into water that’s too shallow for them to escape. This is known as
“stranding”. This year, around 270 pilot whales are stranded after swimming into
shallow water off the island of Tasmania in Australia, which is the largest
whale-stranding event in Tasmania since 1935. The whales were discovered on
Monday—two groups of about 60 and one group of over 200. People are working
hard to save the whales, but at least 90 have died.
Rescue workers are trying to “refloat” the whales. But the whales are so large.

Pilot whales can grow up to seven meters long and can weigh up to 2,300 kilograms.
The whales are moved onto a sling, which allows the rescuers to drag them to deeper
water. However, many of them get stranded in areas that are hard to reach. Rescuers
are focusing on the easiest cases first. “We will take the animals with the best chance
to start with,” says Dr. Kris Carlyon. So far, around 25 animals have been rescued.
Rescue efforts are likely to continue.
Since the rescued whales are likely to return to the shore, workers are trying to
make sure they don’t get stranded again in such wet weather. Dr. Carlyon says the
weather around Tasmania favors whale survival. He describes it as “pretty ugly out
there for people on the ground, but as far as the whales go, it’s perfect.”
Whales travel together in groups called “pods”, which work together closely.
Members of the pod generally follow the leader, so if the leader gets stranded on the
shores of Australia and New Zealand while travelling along the coasts, the others may
do the same. It’s known that a single animal may beach itself if it’s sick or injured.
It’s possible that when groups of whales get stranded, they may be following, or
trying to protect an animal that’s unwell.

Asthma (哮喘) attacks happen when people are allergic to something in the air.
When attacks happen, the airways in their lungs tighten and make it hard to breathe.
More troublesome, people do not know when an attack will happen. But now,
smartphones can help stop attacks.
Propeller Health is a company in Wisconsin. It wants to help those with
breathing problems by using technology along with medicine. The company fitted an
inhaler (吸入器) with a Bluetooth sensor, which connects to a smartphone app. The
inhaler is full of medicine that, when breathed in, stops an asthma attack. When the
patient uses the inhaler, the smartphone records when and where the person has an
attack. The app then stores the records for doctors. The app not only tells doctors
about the attack but also helps them figure out if something is happening around the
patient that makes the asthma worse. Chris Hogg, a manager at Propeller Health, says
collecting information from the inhaler is important. Technology like Bluetooth
sensors is the future of health care. They will help doctors to decide what to pay
attention to when treating patients.
Smart inhalers are part of a new direction in medical technology known as
“connected health”. Fewer than half of asthma patients take their medicine correctly,
said Line Neuhauser, a professor studying asthma treatments. She said the Propeller
Bluetooth sensor tells people if they have taken their medicine correctly, which helps
to prevent attacks and hospitalization.
Another benefit of the sensor is that the company can collect information from
many people. Then, they can see if certain areas set of more asthma attacks than
others. “When we have a lot of users in the same region, we can do a lot to help
them,” Hogg said.
One of Propeller's biggest tests of their system was in Louisville, Kentuck. They
gave 140 people the Bluetooth sensors with inhalers. The study found that being close
to railroads or factories was the main cause of asthma. They also found that public
areas, such as schools and churches, also were causing asthma attacks. After the test,
Propeller gave the information to the city, and the city is making rules to clean up the
air.
