After Brooke Gazer lost her job in 1996, she and her husband Rick decided to
quit their life in Calgary, Alberta, and open their own Bed and Breakfast (B & B).
“Our criterion was, if we were going to change our lives, we’d live someplace warm
near a beach,” says Brooke. They chose Mexico, despite doubt from friends and
family. “Everybody else was frightened for us,” says Brooke. “As a matter of fact, my
试卷第 4 页,共 14 页
best friend said something to the effect of, ‘Brooke, if you’re having a midlife crisis,
wouldn’t it be easier to do something simple, like changing your hair color ’”
In February 1999, they left Calgary for Mexico. After exploring for six months,
they decided on Huatulco, a coastal town in Oaxaca. They purchased land for $75,000
in August 1999 and began building a six-guest-room B & B overlooking Tejoncito
Cove. They opened their B & B, Agua Azul la Villa in January 2002, with the total
cost of the building coming to roughly $350,000.
“Running a B & B was a wonderful lifestyle,” says Brooke. “One of the things
we enjoyed most about traveling was the people we met along the way. With a B & B,
people came to us.” The couple found their money went further in Mexico, but
treating cultural differences took time, particularly the laid-back approach to
scheduling.
After two decades in Huatulco, they moved to Merida, Yucatan, due to Rick’s
health issues. They’ve been living there since 2021. Despite initial safety concerns
from friends and family, it’s never been an issue for them. “We’ve traveled in many
parts of Mexico, and there are a few I won’t go back to. But other than that, to me it’s
a safe country,” says Rick.
Now as retired and Mexican citizens, the couple love their lives in Mexico.
“We’ve been very lucky,” says Brooke. “If people ask if we have any regrets, the only
regret that we have is that we couldn’t afford to do it sooner.”

Born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, Gen Z is often labelled as “digital
natives”. Therefore, it may come as a surprise that Gen Z is turning away from
screens and heading outdoors. From forest bathing to camping trips, more young
adults are embracing nature as part of their lives.
Digital burnout is driving change. Gen Z spends more time online than any
other generation, with daily screen time averaging 6-9 hours. According to a recent
survey by Pew Research Centre, over 60% of Gen Z respondents reported feeling
overwhelmed by the pressures of staying digitally connected. Therefore, nature offers
an escape. For Gen Z, being outdoors isn't just leisure, it’s a form of essential
self-care.
Ironically, the very platforms driving digital burnout are now fuelling nature
engagement. Social media is not just part of the problem but it’s also part of the
solution. Popular hashtags such as #Hiking, #Ice Bathing, #RunningClubs, and
#VanLife have received billions of views online. Health and lifestyle influencers
share experiences of these activities, reframing nature as desirable and reachable.
Although access to nature is still limited by safety concerns, cost, and urban density,
Gen Z is adapting as best as they can. From sharing equipment to joining outdoor
clubs, they’re finding creative ways to reclaim public spaces.
Reconnecting with nature is also driven by environmental values. From
eco-tourism to zero-waste hiking, Gen Z approaches outdoor time with purpose. Gen
Z is reshaping global movements, using social media to spread climate advocacy and
redefine sustainable living. This generation is embracing outdoor experiences that are
low-cost, low-tech, and deeply fulfilling. Amongst all these activities, run clubs and
social fitness events have exploded in popularity.
With a growing number of Gen Z passionate about spending time outdoors, it’s
evident that many are turning to nature to restore balance, foster connection, and

contribute to a healthier world.

To achieve “net zero” by 2045, countries need to cut their emissions (排放) by
85%, compared to 1990. Sweden has achieved an 80% reduction since 1990, securing
its place as the second most sustainable country in the world after Finland. And yet,
Sweden’s economy has been growing steadily since 1970 and ranked sixth in the IMD
World Competitiveness Ranking Report.
Sweden has adopted an aggressive carbon tax as part of tax reform. A carbon
tax is a charge on carbon to inspire businesses to reduce their emissions and find
renewable alternatives. The tax rate has increased steadily since the 1990s and
currently covers 40% of Sweden’s carbon emissions. Instead of the public’s backlash,
the carbon tax was accepted by the Swedish public. Meanwhile, the nation maintained
stable growth and may have even seen economic improvement as it had reduced other
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
taxes to account for the new carbon tax. Sweden also established a Climate Policy
Council that evaluates whether government policies are in line with its climate goals.
Though Sweden is a heavily industrialized country with energy-intensive
industries such as steel, it has managed to massively decarbonize its economy.
Naturally, Sweden has a great supply of wind and water, and forests that cover 70%
of its land that absorb carbon dioxide. Sweden took advantage of these natural
opportunities. It began cutting fossil (化石) fuels in the 1970s during a global oil
crisis, choosing that time to build on nuclear energy and further establish hydropower
and wind energy.
Sweden also helped reduce emissions from heating and energy-intensive
industries by investing in district heating systems powered by biofuel and waste
incineration (焚烧). District heating systems, though expensive, are more efficient
since they distribute heat to multiple houses and industrial areas instead of requiring
separate heating units in each building.
Swedish citizens have been engaged in making sustainable choices, such as
buying ecolabeled products and sorting waste. Data shows 40% of Swedes purchased
eco-labeled products in July, more than the European average, according to the
European Commission. Also, 88%of all metal cans and PET bottles were recycled.
12.What does Sweden’s story in paragraph 1 show
A.Reducing carbon emissions is not very challenging.
B.Climate action can coexist with economic progress.
C.Sweden is most concerned about reducing emissions.
D.Economic growth should not give way to climate action.
13.What does the underlined word “backlash” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Ignorance. B.Confusion. C.Indifference. D.Resistance.
14.What did the Swedish government realize in the 1970s
A.It should protect all its forests. B.It should develop clean energy.
C.It should set an example to the world. D.It should not be highly industrialized.
15.What is implied about Swedish citizens in the last paragraph
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
A.They try to live a green life. B.They lack sustainable choices.
C.They face too many regulations. D.They need good heating systems.

Self-respect is a very important part of a great life. Developing self-respect
means developing self- confidence to deal with whatever life throws at us. The
following are some ways to gain more self-respect.
16 It is helpful to make a list of what you value in life, what your needs
are, and what you want from life. Think about what values you have and how you go
about living them each day (or perhaps, what you may need to improve upon).
Take a look at your relationships with others. A good way to know if you are
respecting yourself is by understanding how the people around you may also be
treating you. 17 If you find yourself feeling disrespected or unsupported by
some people around you, look at how you can make changes. A good way to respect
yourself is to not bend over backward for the people in your life who cross your
boundaries.
Practice self-care. 18 Secondly, when we make a conscious effort to take
care of ourselves emotionally, physically, and spiritually, we remind ourselves that we
are worthy of love, respect, and happiness. The more we appreciate who we are and
give attention to our needs and wants, the more we make self-respect a priority in our
lives.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. 19 We all mess up from time to time. It’s
important to forgive ourselves for our shortcomings and to apologize with grace when
we make mistakes.
Do more things you enjoy. Do you have a favorite hobby but don’t have much
time for it Do it anyway. Whether it’s trying a new bit for your stand-up comedy or
hiking in the mountains, take the time out of your schedule to enjoy them. 20

On a summer vacation morning, I went to a bookstore with my mom. As we
stepped through the entrance, a large sign immediately captured my attention. It read,
“Books: Open Doors to New Worlds. Discover, Dream, Delight.” These words seemed
to dance in the sunlight, leading me to explore all the wonders they promised.
When we made our way between the shelves, I spotted a beautiful book with a
cover that was a masterpiece of colors and images. Unconsciously, my hand reached
out to trace the outlines of the illustrations. I turned to my mom, my eyes begging for
this book, but she shook her head with a sad expression. Our family was going
through a tough time financially, and there was no room for such an expensive
purchase. Disappointed, I dragged my feet and left.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation, I found myself back at the store. I
slipped the book into my bag, my hands trembling with a mix of excitement and guilt.
Just as I was about to leave, the store owner noticed me. I froze, my face flushing with
shame as I was caught red-handed. He stared at me, from whose eyes I could feel the
judgement. I wanted to disappear, but there was no escape. With a shaky voice, I
admitted stealing the book, and promised to make things right. As I walked out, the
sign seemed to scold me. It was a reminder that the world I entered by a wrong path
was disheartening.
I walked home slowly, each step filled with fear. When I saw my mom, I burst
into tears and told her the truth. She looked disappointed, but there was a glimmer of
relief in her eyes that I was honest. She hugged me and said softly, “You made a
mistake, but you had the courage to face it. Remember, there are always right ways to
get what you want.” I nodded. After a moment of silence, my mom said, “Let’s make
things right.”

Should Music Classes Be Offered to Senior 3 Students
In the debate, the affirmative side argued that music classes can relieve stress and improve
students’ overall well-being, which is beneficial for their study. The negative side held that senior
3 students should focus on their academic subjects to prepare for the college entrance
examination.
Personally, I think music classes should be offered. Although senior 3 is a crucial stage, a
little break like music can help students relax and enhance their efficiency. Moreover, music can
also cultivate students’ creativity and aesthetic ability, which are important qualities for their
future development.

mom, I gathered the courage and apologized to the store owner. Much to my surprise, the owner

Following his instructions carefully, I worked hard by dusting book covers and arranging books
neatly on the shelves. As I was engaged in these tasks during the vacation, I came to realize the
value of earning something through honest work.
When I finished my summer job, the owner handed me the book with a smile. I received the
book with a sense of pride and gratitude. The owner patted me on the shoulder and offered words
of praise. My mom was also proud of me for working diligently for my small dream. This scene
made me even more aware of the significance of my efforts. As I walked out of the store, the sign
