Most of us are afraid to fail. Our fear of failure isn’t surprising. From an early age, we’re surrounded by people who value perfection. Parents tell us to bring home A’s. Coaches teach us to go for the gold, not the silver or bronze. And on social media, people share only the coolest parts of their lives. Usually, they keep their struggles to themselves.
What’s so bad about being afraid to fail It might seem like a “win at everything” attitude would push you to succeed. In reality, it can seriously hold you back. For example, many people get one bad grade on an algebra (代数) test and decide they’ re not smart enough for math.
According to experts, that’s the wrong way to think. They say failing is good for you. It teaches you to stick with a task even when it gets hard. The ability to do this is called grit(毅力). To people with grit, failure is not a reason to give up, but a chance to improve.
There’s one place where failure is surely valued: technology companies. To the leaders of these companies, a failed app or website isn’t a problem. It’s a chance to build something better next time.
Tech leaders have even gathered for an event called FailCon. At a FailCon, they learn from ideas that didn’t work. “Sometimes things just don’t go as planned,” says the FailCon website. “But that doesn’t mean you should stop trying.”
That message got through to a man named Evan Williams. In 2005, he developed an app called Odeo. Not many people used it. It was a big disappointment. But Williams learned from his mistakes and kept working hard. He showed grit. And a few years later, he helped create one of the biggest social media sites ever.
4. Why are we afraid to fail according to the text
A We believe failure is shameful.
B. Failure blocks our way to success.
C. We do not know how to deal with failure.
D. Today’s society puts a lot of pressure on us to succeed.
5 What are people with grit most likely to do when they fail
A. Seek help. B. Accept failure.
C Keep working hard. D. Try something new.
6. Why do tech leaders have FailCon
A. To develop an app. B. To design a website.
C. To learn from failure. D. To develop work plans.
7. What does the author want to tell us by the example of Evan Williams
A. Failure is a common thing in one’s life.
B. Success comes to those who never give up.
C. Winners make it happen; losers let it happen.
D. The secret of success is not to change your goals.
C
When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends asked me how I could stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kinds of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.
It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi was the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.
When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, some people chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.
Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids played while their parents sat nearby. I could see and hear almost everything from there. People watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park!
Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must be hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud.
When I’m old, I hope that I will also have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.
8. Some of the author’s friends think “the sounds of life” are very________.
A. unpleasant B. unique
C. magical D. interesting
9. The author took the bus to the park because________.
A. there was no other transport to go there
B. he wanted to see more about people’s life
C. it was the most convenient way
D. his friend advised him to do so
10. The author closed his eyes in order to ________.
A. have a good rest
B. hide himself from view
C. enjoy the sounds of life
D. avoid talking with the two old men
11. The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A. truly different B. quite popular
C. rather strange D. extremely funny
D
The southwestern United States has experienced drought for more than 20 years. Arizona has increasingly pumped (抽吸) water from underground, but that meets less than half of what the state needs. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of new residents arrive every year, and more communities are built. One report shows that a large area near Phoenix doesn’t have enough groundwater for all the homes that developers want to build there. That means 800,000 people.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination (脱盐) plant on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. The plant would remove salt from the water and pump that water to Arizona through a 200-mile pipeline. Supporters say this could provide a water supply for decades.
Environmentalists see a different future. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process uses lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases, the very gases that are causing the conditions that have led to Arizona’s water problems.
Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to show much more unsustainable development in the desert in the future. Moreover, desalinating water would likely be a massive expenditure for Arizonans. Cities pay about $50 to $150 for 326,000 gallons. That’s enough for a family of three in Phoenix for a year. Desalinated water could charge 20 times as much.
Environmentalists say the government should focus on cutting the demand for water rather than increasing the supply. That would mean taking water-saving measures and limiting how many homes are built. Thousands of households in Tucson, Arizona, are collecting rainwater and using it for cooking, drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
12. What is the problem faced by the southwestern United States
A. A population increase. B. A serious heatwave.
C. A waste of resources. D. A water shortage.
13. What do environmentalists probably think of the desalination project
A. It provides a long-term solution to drought.
B. It would harm the planet from various aspects.
C. It fails to take people’s basic needs into account.
D. It draws people’s attention to environmental destruction.
14. What does the underlined part “a massive expenditure” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Affordable. B. Costly. C. Unsafe. D. Beneficial.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. People are unsatisfied with the government’s water measures.
B. Collecting rainwater is the key to meeting water demands.
C. People are exploring water resources with official support.
D. Public concern about water safety has increased.

Everybody gets angry, but out-of-control anger isn’t good for you or those around you. So here are five simple strategies to help you learn how to manage your anger:
● Relax. Breathe deeply from your stomach. ____16____ Repeat it to yourself and visualize a relaxing time and experience.
● Change the way you think. When you’re angry, your thinking can get exaggerated (夸大的). ____17____ For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it’s terrible! Everything’s ruined,” tell yourself, “It’s understandable that I’m upset about it, but it’s not the end of the world.”
● ____18____ Statements like “This never works.” or “You’re always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified (情有可原的) and there’s no way to solve the problem. They might upset people who might be willing to work with you to find a solution.
● Have better communication. Angry people tend to jump to conclusions. If you are in a heated discussion, slow down. ____19____ And take your time before answering. Instead of saying the first thing that comes into your head, think carefully about what you want to say.
● Use humor. Psychologists say that highly angry people tend to think “things ought to go my way!” “Silly humor” can help you get a more balanced perspective. So, when you feel that anger comes the next time, picture yourself as a king or queen, walking around, admired by everybody, and getting your own way in every situation. The more detail you can get into your imaginary scenes, the more likely it is to put a smile on your face. ____20____
A. Be careful with words like “never” or “always”.
B. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.
C. Try replacing these thoughts with more reasonable ones.
D Avoid using these strategies when you’re in a tense situation.
E. Then slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as “take it easy”.
F. Try changing the topics so your talks won’t turn into arguments.
G. That will help you realize that the things you’re angry about are really not very important.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me ” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

答案】 Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.
