Several years ago, I experienced daily migraines (偏头痛) that made me want to bang my head against a brick wall. I was desperate (急迫的) to find a cure. Despite trying different solutions, nothing worked.
In my hopelessness, my father suggested acupuncture, a treatment he had experienced in Hong Kong. It had successfully relieved his lower back pain when other therapies and medicines had failed. With limited exposure to traditional Chinese medicine, I decided to give acupuncture a try.
With no particular expectations, I found myself in the office of a middle-aged woman, surrounded by Chinese herbal medicines. After explaining my issue, she placed three fingers on my wrist to feel my heartbeat. I was then guided to a room and told to lie down. Soon, she took out the needles, which made me somewhat uneasy as such objects typically make me uncomfortable.
My initial experience with acupuncture was quite surprising. To address my headache, the treatment began on the back of my hand, far from my head. As the doctor gently handled the needles, I got the feeling that something was flowing through my entire body.
The doctor then continued to tap and move more needles across my body. The electricity was turned on, and the doctor left the room. While lying still, I could sense the electricity flowing throughout me. Around the five-minute mark, the doctor returned and adjusted the electricity level. A moment later, before I knew it, she turned off the electricity and removed the needles, marking an end to the 30-minute process. She then gave me some herbal medicine to drink for five days.
I returned to the doctor for a total of 10 sessions, and each time the same routine was repeated and the same herbal medicine was given. The true benefits of the acupuncture treatment became clear. I remained free of headaches for two years. I now advocate acupuncture. If you’ve experienced similar conditions, I highly recommend trying it.

Cities across the globe are taking different paths in smart governance.
One example is the development of the Urban Brain in Beijing’s Haidian district since 2018.Recently, the district implemented Jiuzhou, a large data model, to enhance the Urban Brain. The Urban Brain uses artificial intelligence (AI) to quickly analyze data and find citizens’ most significant concerns. It generates solutions within minutes, making urban governance more intelligent.
During a live demonstration of the Urban Brain, the data model identified the top three streets with the highest resolution rates (解决率) of noise pollution in early August 2023, when asked to make a list of them. It can also offer better recommendations for addressing the issue.
In terms of environmental sustainability (可持续性), the management of air and water with the Urban Brain is also ongoing. With 198 fixed monitoring devices and five mobile air quality monitors, air quality is analyzed in real time, aiding in addressing environmental issues and achieving positive results.
Cities worldwide are at different stages of smart technology development and implementation. Singapore is a frontrunner (领先者) in creating fully smart governance, utilizing Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled cameras to monitor public space cleanliness and systems for real-time monitoring of energy use, waste management and water use.
San Diego in California, US, has used 3,200 smart sensors for improving traffic flow, parking, public safety and environmental awareness. Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, uses smart city technology for traffic routing, parking, infrastructure (基础设施) planning, transportation, smart healthcare, smart buildings, education and tourism.
Smart governance aims to improve city functions, boost economic growth and enhance citizens’ quality of life through smart technologies and data analysis.

Less than 2,000 light-years away from Earth, a new black hole with a mass 33 times greater than that of our sun was spotted recently. Though the black hole, named Gaia BH3, is the second-closest known to our home planet, it gives out little detectable radiation and had therefore gone undetected. “It’s a complete surprise,” says Pasquale Panuzzo, the study’s lead author and an astronomer at the Observatory de Paris.
Located in the constellation (星座) Aquila the Eagle, Gaia BH3 was uncovered by chance in a mass of data and observations collected by European Space Agency (ESA) astronomers. As the team reviewed findings from the agency’s Gaia mission, which is building a 3D map of our galaxy (星系), something unusual caught their attention: a strange star some 1,926 light-years away. The object’s curious motion indicated that a large black hole nearby had locked it into an orbit.
To prove their finding, the team of astronomers and ground operators used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, located in Chile, to confirm Gaia BH3’s mass. In findings published in the journal astronomy & Astrophysics, they shared that the unusual star orbits the black hole every 11.6 years. And Gaia BH3 is a type of black hole caused by the collapse of a star, known as a stellar (恒星的) black hole — and it’s the largest of this type discovered in our galaxy.
The average size of stellar black holes in the Milky Way is about ten times the mass of the sun, with the previous record-holder, called Cygnus X-1, being 21 times the mass of the sun. Still, in terms of the vast quantity of black holes, the 33-solar-mass Gaia BH3 is relatively small. For instance, Sagittarius A*, the super massive black hole in the center of the Milky Way, has a mass four million times larger than that of the sun. Gaia BH3 is the second-closest black hole to Earth, behind only Gaia BH1, which is 1,500 light-years away and ten times the mass of the sun.
The discovery is significant, as it provides astronomers with clues to better understand how the deaths of ancient stars gave rise to stellar black holes.
