Leisure time is time that is free from school, work and chores. It is a time when you can do what you like. After eating, sleeping and working, most people still have about five hours of leisure time each day.
Very young children spend less time working each day, but they spend longer sleeping.
There are many different leisure activities. Some you can do on your own and some with other people. You can do some indoors and others outdoors. Some of the leisure activities you can do on your own are reading or drawing. There are even more activities you can carry out with other people.
Group leisure activities include playing team sports or going to the cinema with friends.
Most leisure activities, like sports, need special areas of land or special buildings. Football fields, tennis courts and swimming pools need special areas. Cinemas, clubs and other activities need special buildings. All of these are big users of space, and land is expensive in town and city centers.
That is why most sports grounds are in the countryside or away from the city center, where there is more space and where land is less expensive.
All the leisure activities have some effect (影响) on the environment (环境). The leisure activities that have the biggest effect are those that use engines (发动机) and so make air pollution (污染). Motor racing and similar sports can be very bad to the environment.
