【中华优秀传统文化·扎染】
The colourful clothes we wear today are made by machines. But what did ancient people do if they wanted to wear something colourful Tie dyeing(扎染法) was a way to do this.
More than 1,000 years ago, the Bai people in Yunnan used tie dyeing to dye their clothes. During the Tang and Song dynasties, this skill became so popular that people gave tie dyed clothes to the officers as gifts.
To tie dye, you need to first use ropes or other tools. The folded(折叠的) cloth is then put in dye. The Bai people usually make blue dye from a plant. As the cloth is folded, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a lighter colour. When you unfold the cloth, you will see beautiful patterns. Some of them may look like animals, and others may look like plants.
In the 1960s, tie dyeing became popular in the US. People tie dyed T shirts and jeans in imaginative ways. Many children in the US still learn tie dyeing in their art classes.
In 2019 in France, Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri surprised people with beautiful tie dyed dresses.“Tie dyeing is like an experiment,” Chiuri said. “It’s creative. We don’t know what it will be like, until the very end. It’s a surprise.” It seems that the tie dyeing has never really gone away.

Scientists from China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University are developing a robot “guide dog” to help blind people. With the help of cameras and AI, the robot dog can see, listen and speak with blind people. Blind people can also use a cane(手杖) to control the robot’s walking and running speed. The robot can even recognise traffic lights—real guide dogs are unable to do that.
The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog(斗牛狗) but a little wider. It has six legs instead of four. The other two legs make it more steady(稳定的) and help it move faster.
41 year old Li Fei and 42 year old Zhu Sibin are helping test the robot. Li is totally blind and Zhu can only see a little. “The robot dog will make it easier to get into public places. It could change our lives in the near future,” Li said.
In China, there are about 17.31 million blind people, but there are only about 400 guide dogs. The new robot is trying to solve this problem. “We believe our robot will act as ‘a pair of eyes’ for blind people,” said Professor(教授) Gao Feng, one of the scientists. He thinks there could be a large market for these robot dogs.

Chang’e 7 probe(探测器) will travel to the moon in 2026. Thanks to some school kids in Hunan, it will carry a special national flag(国旗) of China.
During a regular meeting of Lushan International Experimental Primary School’s science club, Deng Haoxuan raised an interesting question, “There is no wind on the moon, so how can we make the flag fly ” This question led to a heated(激烈的) discussion among his classmates.
Deng remembered that magnets(磁铁) can push away from each other, and he thought this might help the flag fly. However, when they tried using magnets, they found them too heavy and the flag kept falling.
Then, Deng and his team came up with a new idea. They glued wires(电线) to the flag. When the electric passed through these wires, it created a magnetic field(磁场). This made the flag move like magnets do.
The kids didn’t stop there. They learned that the idea might still work in space. After months of continuous testing and countless adjustments(调整), they finally discovered the ideal position to place the wires.
“It’s amazing that our idea worked, and soon we’ll see the five star red flag fly in space,” Deng said with excitement.

At 13, Sophia Martinez has become the youngest winner of the National Environmental Youth Award. Her project “Eco Warrior App(生态战士应用程序)” joins technology with environmental protection, helping users track(追踪) their environmental effects through fun daily challenges.
Sophia’s journey began during her 3rd grade field trip to a polluted river. “Seeing plastic waste blocking the water made me angry,” she looked back. By age 9, she started programming simple environmental games using free online resources. Her recent app, developed with recycled smartphones(可回收智能手机), has been used by 50 schoolsnationwide.
What makes Sophia’s work special is her focus on community activities. “Tech alone can’t save the planet. We need to change hearts first,” she said. The app’s group challenges have reduced(减少) school dining hall waste by 30% in pilot(飞行员) areas.
Her science teacher, Mr Thompson, praises Sophia’s hard work. “She failed 17 times while designing the waste tracking tool. Each failure became a learning step.” Parents are happy with how the app turns eco actions into family activities. “Now my kids remind me to bring bags that can be used again,” shared one mother.
Looking ahead, Sophia plans to start a “Green Mentor” programme that connects students with scientists who study the environment. “Every child should protect their future,” she stated. With a recent money support from the Environmental Protection Organisation, her team plans to add more languages to the app to benefit non English speaking communities.
