Though it’s a small steel box powered by electricity, it’s widely used and becomes a part of life.
We have been told some rules about taking a lift. In my daily life, it’s common for me to wait for the lift. The lift won’t be in your control. It runs by following instructions and meeting the need of people.
First, I’m expected to enter the lift after the people in the lift get out. When I meet kids or old people, I will wait patiently(耐心地). But if I enter a little later, the door will close by itself.
Second, I hardly ever use my phone in the lift. Because I’m afraid that the high voice may trouble others. A quiet ride is necessary. Sometimes, taking a glance at someone else’s screen is not polite. When I take out the phone, it’s hard to avoid being glanced at by others unintentionally(无意地).
Third, if someone in the lift presses the pause(暂停) button for you, you won’t wait for another one. And you should say “Thanks” to him or her. Good manners mean a lot, whenever and wherever.

As a teacher, you, of course, need to set up general rules for your classroom. But how do you make your students want to follow the rules Let them give you a hand to create those rules! Here’s how to do it. Start with a list of what you consider the most important rules, and then, through discussion, work with your students to create a set of rules expressed in their language.
Use this list as a starting point, making changes to meet the needs of your class:
#1 Treat others as you would like to be treated.
#2 Be responsible(负责的) for your own learning.
#3 Come to class and hand in homework on time.
#4 Do not disturb(打扰) people who are studying.
#5 ...
Most teachers agree that it’s best to choose only a few rules—those that lead to successful learning and an orderly environment. It’s too hard to remember a long list! Make your rules as clear as possible. Then decide with your students’ help what the results will be for breaking those rules.
Teaching the rules should be your first lesson. Discuss each rule with the students, explaining the reason behind it, and ask for examples of how it could be broken. Explain that rules help make everyone’s time in school more enjoyable, and use examples to explain this point. It’s also a good idea to post the rules in the classroom and each student is advised to take a copy of the rules home.
C. By listing the most important rules.
D. By allowing them to help create rules.

Do you put up your hand when you want to speak in class If so, you have followed a rule. Rules can be as simple as putting up your hand. They can also be as complicated(复杂的) as knowing when you are “out” in a game. Rules can be made by anyone. Parents make rules to help children grow up healthily. Rules at home might include washing dishes or cleaning rooms.
Teachers make rules to help students learn and stay safe. Putting up your hand before asking a question helps the class pay attention to the lesson. Students make rules in games to make sure that they can play without fighting. Rules can be changed often. If you change your minds, you can change the rules.
Laws are also rules, but they are made differently. Laws are made by elected representatives(被选出的代表). Voters(选民) allow their representatives to make laws that can protect people’s rights, safety and make sure everyone can be treated fairly. Laws cannot be changed often, so representatives consider laws carefully before making new ones.
The biggest difference between rules and laws is the punishment(处罚) for breaking them. If you break a rule, your punishment might be small, like losing a turn in a game. However, if a person breaks an important law, the punishment might be a fine(罚款) or time in prison(监狱).
Rules and laws keep everyone safe. People can work and live together in peace by following rules and laws.

Travelling by subway can sometimes be quite an adventure, especially during rush hour. You have to fight your way into the carriage(车厢). And there are times when you have to avoid cups of coffee that could spill on you. The smells of some passengers’ food are very strong, too.
The local government of Beijing has been collecting public opinions on the revised(修订的) Beijing Metro Passenger Rules. The rules say that if passengers behave in an uncivilised(不文明的) manner while on the subway, they will end up with bad credit(信用) scores or even being banned from the subway, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
Four kinds of behaviours were added to the revised rules. They include stealing others’ seats, eating or drinking, riding without paying the fare(车票) and handing out advertisements.
What’s worth mentioning is that people have different opinions regarding eating and drinking on the subway, Guangming Daily reported. The rules state that all passengers except babies and people with certain health issues are not allowed to eat or drink on the subway. People have pointed out that the smell of food and drink can annoy(使烦恼) other passengers.
However, others question this rule, saying that drinking water should be allowed as people can get thirsty after long rides on the crowded subway. They also think it is too harsh to lower someone’s social credit score just for eating or drinking.

A. Because you can’t find a seat there.
B. Because you may spill your coffee and can’t enjoy it happily.

【中华优秀传统文化·儒家思想】
Confucianism(儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants(五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues(美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule—treat others as you wish to be treated.
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors(祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying(听从) and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious(和谐的) society. Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Dear Susan,
I’m glad to share with you the rules I have to follow at home and school.
At home, I must finish homework on time and help with housework, like cleaning or cooking. Also, I am not allowed to use my phone after 9 pm. These rules teach me time management and responsibility. At school, we have to wear uniforms every day and keep the school clean. Moreover, we must listen carefully in class and respect teachers. Though the rules sometimes are strict, these rules help me focus better and build good habits. I used to complain, but now I understand rules shape me into a better person.
What about you What rules do you have to follow
Yours,
Li Hua
