Photographer Brandon Stanton has spent more than a decade building the global
storytelling movement called Humans of New York, a project that shares photos and personal
stories of people he meets on the street. Now he is celebrating the city where it all began with his fifth book, Dear New York.
Stanton grew up in Marietta, Georgia, and studied history at the University of Georgia.
After college, he worked in finance in Chicago, Illinois. In 2010, he lost his job and moved to
New York City with an idea: to photograph 10,000 people throughout the city and ask them their story. His subjects ranged from a retired teacher to an immigrant (移民)starting a business. It evolved into the series Humans of New York on social media and now has more than 30 million followers worldwide.
Over the years, Stanton became a best-selling author of five collections of his photography, beginning with Humans of New York in 2013. His newest book, Dear New York, is filled with
hundreds of portraits and stories collected over two years from across the city’s five districts.
Staton had the book published to complete a strong charitable mission: all the proceeds from the book are used to support various voluntary service programs in New York City, including a local food bank and a youth arts program.
Alongside the book, Stanton revealed an installation (装置艺术) at Grand Central
Terminal that ran for two weeks in October, featuring more than 150 digital screens showing
portraits and stories from the city. It also included an art showcase with photos taken by more than 600 public school students. Stanton called it “a celebration of people,” adding that a special
“message wall” allowed visitors to share their own reflections.
Stanton told CBS there are three parts to his mission: “To use my work to provide comfort, improve the lives of other people, and create moments of connection.”

Severe winters and modem cities make life tough for wild animals, especially when they get lost or wander too far from their natural habitats. Animal sanctuaries (庇护所) are often flooded with animals in desperate need of help, especially in winter—yet a recent rescue at the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary in Eastern England stood out for an unusual reason.
This sanctuary, which typically cares for injured owls, received its first-ever overweight
owl (猫头鹰). A member of the public found the small, wet bird struggling in a bush and brought it in. A thorough check-up revealed no injuries; the owl couldn’t fly simply because it was
overweight—weighing 245 grams, 33% above the normal upper limit for its size. The cause was natural: an unusually warm winter, combined with a sharp four-year population increase of mice, created an “all-you-can-eat buffet” that led the owl to overeat.
The sanctuary put the owl on a diet and exercise routine, and it quickly lost weight and regained health. It was eventually released back into the wild, with a video of its smooth flight from a wooden box posted on the sanctuary’s Facebook page.
Whether this obesity (肥胖症) case is a strange effect of climate change or a coincidence of mouse population cycles and milder weather remains unclear. However, it emphasizes the
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
importance of protecting wild animals. If you encounter a suffering wild animal, approach with caution—wear gloves and avoid risks, as they may be unused to humans, tending to attack, or carrying diseases.
Wild animals struggle to adapt to modern cities, and animal sanctuaries serve as vital safe
shelters. Staffed by professionals, these sanctuaries rescue not only injured or sick animals but
also those in danger, especially critical in winter when food and shelter are lacking. While some
focus on specific species like owls and others on certain regions, all share the same goal: to restore wild animals to their natural state and return them to the wild.
8 .Why was the rescue of the owl by the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary considered unusual
A .It was for an owl found struggling in a bush.
B .It marked the sanctuary’s first overweight owl case.
C .It involved a species rarely seen in that region of England.
D .It released an owl back into the wild sooner than expected.
9 .What does the author imply by mentioning the video on Facebook
A .The sanctuary has a large number of fans.
B .The sanctuary keeps track of the owl in the wild.
C .The owl has recovered and returned to nature.
D .The public is eager to know the situation of the owl.
10 .What message does the author want to convey through the owl case
A .Animal sanctuaries should pay attention to animal obesity.
B .Environmental changes can disturb natural animal behavior.
C .Wildlife should be kept in sanctuaries for better protection.
D .Global warming is the primary threat to all wildlife populations.
11 .What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A .To list the different types of animal sanctuaries.
B .To emphasize the essential role of animal sanctuaries.
C .To explain the challenges wild animals face in cities.
D .To call for more public donations to sanctuaries.

Scientists have made a breakthrough in helping those suffering from visual disorders by placing tiny electronic chips into the back of their eyes. The chips are only 2mm wide, about as thick as a grain of rice.
A trial involved 38 patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (黄斑变性), a condition mostly affecting the elderly and making central vision unclear. Around 600,000 people
in the UK have AMD. The trial was conducted at 17 hospitals in five European countries,
including the UK. The patients had “dry AMD”, which damages light-detecting cells at the back of the eye. These cells transform light into electrical signals for the brain. When these cells are damaged or destroyed, they cause poor vision, and there is currently no cure for this condition.
The tiny “bionic” chips can give people back some sight. Bionic means a man-made object
that acts as a body part. The patients get a pair of glasses with a built-in video camera and a small
pocket-sized black box that processes the data. When wearing the glasses, the patient looks at an
object, for instance, a book. The camera captures the image, sends data to the black box for
clarification, and the processed information is then delivered to the chip under the retina (视网膜). The wireless chip sends signals (just like TV remotes do) to the optic nerve (视觉神经), which communicates with the brain. However, patients need time to train their brains to interpret the
images.
Patients can only see in black and white, but it has significantly improved the lives of those who were treated. Seventy-year-old Sheila Irvine was one of the patients who took part in the trial.
She is registered as blind, but now is able to read books and do crosswords. “It is amazing,” she told the BBC. “I am one happy cookie now.”
Scientists are also excited. “Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central
vision restoration, which has never been done before,” said Mahi Muqit, an associate professor at University College London.
12 .What can be inferred about the “breakthrough” mentioned in the first paragraph
A .It restores partial vision for a specific previously incurable condition.
B .It marks the first successful medical application of bionic technology.
C .It provides a complete and permanent cure for patients with AMD.
D .Its innovation lies in the extremely small size of the electronic chip.
13 .What is the main problem caused by “dry AMD”
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
A .It prevents the eyes from producing tears.
B .It makes the patient’s glasses difficult to wear.
C .It causes the optic nerve to stop working completely.
D .It damages the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye.
14 .How does the bionic chip help patients regain sight
A .By delivering signals to the black box.
B .By capturing clear images for the eyes.
C .By changing light into electrical signals itself.
D .By sending processed signals to the optic nerve.
15 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A .A New Cure Discovered for Dry AMD
B .A Breakthrough treatment for the Blind
C .A Bionic Chip for Partial Vision Restoration
D .A Wireless Chip for Instant AMD Sight Recovery

Leo was a quiet student at Pinewood High with a deep love for his school. He preferred to keep away from the laughter and games of his classmates; the quiet music room was his favorite place. His excellent violin talent had earned him a scholarship, making him focus more on music and spend little time with lively peers. Most days, he devoted himself in musical notes, finding comfort in the peace of music and rarely interacting with members of other clubs.
When autumn arrived, a new rule for the annual talent show was announced: each
performance must be a group work involving at least three students from different clubs, themed “One Stage We Create”. The winning work would be given prize money. His music teacher, Mr. Davies, encouraged him to form a team, filling Leo with a mix of unease and excitement. “You
have a gift, Leo,” Mr. Davies said gently, “but a gift is meant to be shared. Find classmates from the art or literature club who can connect with your music.” Leo hoped to win, as he wanted to use the prize money to make his beloved school more beautiful.
Mr. Davies’ words stayed in his mind. Leo was not used to face-to-face invitations, as he

seldom spoke to classmates outside of class. School posters with “TOGETHER WE CREATE” were constant reminders ofthe task ahead. Determined to step out of his music world and work
with others to win the prize, he decided to post a notice online to find teammates—a choice that made him feel much more at ease.
That night, he took a deep breath and posted on the school website: “Looking for 2
teammates from different clubs for the talent show. I play the violin and wish to combine music with art or literature. Theme: One Stage We Create” . He hesitated for a moment before clicking “send”.
