Historic Sites in Paris
Paris is a city full of sites of different times and architectural styles. Here are some of these famous spots that
are essential to understand the city’s complicated past.
Eiffel Tower
Presented as part of the 1889 World Exposition in Paris, the Eiffel Tower has become the city’s most famous
attraction. It can be reached on Line 6 or Line 8 of the Paris Metro by Bir-Hakeim or Trocadéro stations. If possible,
avoid visiting this spot at peak hours (10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) or on weekends, so you can make the most of your
visit to enjoy the views from the top. The best moments are right after it first opens on weekdays.
Notre-Dame Cathedral
Dating back to the 12th century, the Notre-Dame Cathedral has long towered alongside the banks of the Seine
River. With its complicated Gothic architectural details, it represents Parisian religion and architecture.
Unfortunately, a fire broke out on April 15, 2019, destroying part of it. Visitors are not allowed to enter now.
Louvre Museum
Louvre Museum is one of the most famous art museums in the world where you can witness the city’s rich
painting history from the medieval period to the present. It can easily be reached on Line 1 from the Palais
Royal-Musée du Louvre station. It is closed on Tuesdays as well as January 1, May 1, and December 25 each year.
Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe serves as a national symbol of France, which was built by Napoleon I in celebration of
the victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. Take Line 1, 2, or 6 to Charles de Gaulle-Etoile station and you will see the
Arc de Triomphe. Visitors can purchase tickets for a tour to the top to enjoy the views of the city.

Recently, I’ve been on a memory trip. The memories were actually my mother-in-law’s. She’d always wanted
to revisit the town in Tavistock, where she was born and grew up, even though she’d once rushed to leave it. But
such nostalgic trips can be disappointing. So much has changed. Is it worth the risk
My wife had tried to arrange visits to two houses. How would people react when they got a letter from a total
stranger asking to bring her elderly mother round, just because she’d lived there as a girl The letters were a shot in
the dark. The only reply was a rejection from a lady whose husband had just broken both feet.
Well, we’d paid for the trip, so why let the opportunity go to waste No reply had come from the second house,
number 17, so we decided just to look at it from the outside. Except: “Are you sure it was number 17 It says
number 12 here.”
The houses had been renumbered — my wife had written to the wrong house. Then, as we stood outside
number 12, a message arrived from number 17: “Anytime tomorrow morning would be fine. Look forward to
seeing you.” And there was I thinking how house numbers made life easier for postal workers than charming old
names like Honeysuckle Cottage and Holly-Tree House.
We knocked at number 12. Another disappointment: no one home — only two cats on armchairs. But we
returned the next morning. This time, the owner welcomed us in, happily showing us pictures of the renovations he’
d done to this 18th-century house.
A letter sent to the wrong address rarely leads to a happy ending. In both stories and life, a simple misdirection
can cost dearly-a dream job lost, or a long — awaited reunion missed. But our story did end happily, and I take
my hat off to the people of Tavistock. We were perfect strangers, but they were perfect hosts.
4. What does “a shot in the dark” in paragraph 2 mean
A. An attempt with little hope. B. A risky request.
C. An invitation with no response. D. A careless decision.
5. What caused the confusion when the author’s family visited the second house
A. The owner’s refusal to meet. B. An error in the letter’s address.
C. A change in house numbers. D. The mix-up of old house names.
6. Why does the author contrast their story’s ending with typical outcomes of misdirection
A. To stress the cost of mistakes. B. To show they were just lucky.
C. To argue for careful trip planning. D. To highlight the kindness they met.
7. How did the author’s feelings about the trip change
A. From being a bit nervous to pretty excited. B. From feeling worried to pleasantly surprised.
C. From having no interest to becoming curious. D. From hoping for a lot to accepting fairly little.

A subway line that links downtown Beijing with Daxing International Airport in the Chinese capital now
allows passengers to enter and exit stations by just scanning the palm of a hand, setting an example of how using
biometric data in public transportation can make commuting more convenient.
The pilot program was launched on Sunday on the Daxing Airport Express subway line to spare passengers
the trouble of swiping a card(刷卡)or scanning a QR code to catch a train , the Beijing Municipal Commission of
Transport said.
Any commuter aged 14 and above can first register the print of either palm through a simple, automated
process and provide relevant information to authorize the payment gateway of WeChat, a popular messaging app in
China. Once the palm print is registered, a commuter can scan the palm at any automated ticket gate to pass
through. The fare is automatically paid after exit. Besides, the registration is a one-time process and doesn’t require
renewal.
“Passengers can just place a palm above the scanning machine when entering or exiting a subway station. The
ticket gate will open if the palm scan matches the palm print registered voluntarily,” said Zhang Li, an expert at the
Beijing Metro Network Control Center.
The biometric method combines the use of palm print and vein mapping, which are different for every
individual. Therefore, data masking and encryption(加密) technologies have been applied to protect user
information.
Xin Jianhua, general manager of the public service center at WeChat Pay, said palm scans can be gradually
used in offices, schools, gyms and restaurants, as it requires no contact and is therefore safer and more efficient.
“Currently, it is very useful for the elderly and those who have physical limitations,” he said. “Use of biometric
data allows passengers to take subway trains if they do not have cash or when they forget their subway cards,” he
added.
8. What do we know about palm scanning
A. Anyone aged 14 and above has to register the print.
B. Passengers should have both palms registered.
C. There is an automatic payment after exit.
D. The registration needs updating every year.
9. What does the underlined word “masking” probably mean
A. Hiding. B. Decoding. C. Uploading. D. Removing.
10. Which statement may Xin Jianhua disagree with
A. The future of palm scans is promising.
B. The new technology is more time-saving.
C. Palm scanning is of limited use to the disabled.
D. Palm scanning spares passengers the trouble of taking cards.
11. What’s the main idea of this article
A. The ways of riding the subway in Beijing.
B. People’s attitudes towards palm scanning in the subway.
C. Beijing’s introduction of palm-print access on a subway line.
D. The advantages of scanning palms to enter and exit subway stations.
D
Obviously, I’m not alone in thinking about the wildlife of the park. People from around the world have been
flooding my Facebook and Instagram inboxes with questions about how the bears, wolves and other wildlife are
surviving during one of the largest wildfires in the history of one of the world’s most beloved national parks.
The good news is that most large animals, particularly the bears and wolves, have the ability to outrun most
fires, even one as fast and as violent as the Jasper wildfire has been. By this point in the summer, the wolf pack that
lives in the Athabasca River valley will have mobile three-month-old young wolves that can travel dozens of
kilometres, if need be, to flee any fire danger. Similarly, most bears in the valley will be able to outpace the fires if
they have a path of escape and don’t get pinned against a wild river or an unclimbable cliff (悬崖).
There is a real concern for mother bears with baby bears of the year (those born this year) that are still too
small to travel quickly in such fast-changing conditions — several bears were killed in the similarly-sized Kenow
wildfire in Waterton Lakes National Park in 2017. However, despite the size of this wildfire (about 360 square
kilometres have been burned to date), there are still over 10,000 square kilometres of Jasper National Park that
remain fire-free and safe for wildlife like black bears.
The short-term effects of the fires may also be felt by Jasper bears that would normally be fattening up on
buffaloberries in the valley bottom, where the fire has burned the most violently. Thankfully, any temporary effects
on bear populations should right themselves as the forest renews and regrows in the Athabasca River valley in the
years to come, providing plenty of bear food and very suitable homes that will help keep the park’s wolf
populations healthy, too.
12. Why are mother bears with baby bears of the year a major concern
A. They are not familiar with the escape routes.
B. They prefer to stay in the very valley bottom.
C. The baby bears are too young to move quickly.
D. They rely on buffaloberries destroyed by the fire.
13. What can we learn about the Jasper wildfire from the text
A. It has burned the entire area of Jasper National Park.
B. It is the largest wildfire in the history of national parks.
C. It has caused no harm to the park’s wolf populations.
D. It covers an area of about 360 square kilometres so far.
14. What is the writer’s attitude toward Jasper National Park’s wildfire
A. Concerned but optimistic about wildlife’s survival.
B. Panicked and hopeless about the park’s future.
C. Indifferent to the bad effect on the whole ecosystem.
D. Critical of the lack of fire prevention measures.
15. What would be the most suitable title for the text
A. The Disastrous Effects of Jasper National Park’s Wildfire
B. How Wildlife in Jasper National Park Deals with the Wildfire
C. Measures to Protect Bears and Wolves in Jasper National Park
D. The History of Large Wildfires in World-Famous National Parks

Economists have a name for what you must give up while you wait. We call this your opportunity cost. For
example, you are always queuing a long time for a concert ticket. ____16____
The advice you can find on the internet for beating the lines at the Sistine Chapel often involves going early,
perhaps before the museum opens, to secure a spot toward the front of the line. ____17____ If I arrive an hour
before tickets go on sale to be first in line, but the wait would be only forty minutes long if I arrived when the
museum opened, I end up waiting longer, not less.
Whether arriving early shortens my wait depends on when others choose to arrive, and if all tourists follow the
same internet advice and arrive an hour early, the lines at opening may be the longest of the day. It is hard to
predict when the wait will actually be the shortest.
____18____ Rather than going when you think the lines might be the shortest, you can go when your
opportunity cost is the smallest-for example, when you have nothing (or little) better to do.
____19____ Sometimes, it increases the total amount of time you wait, though.
By arriving before opening, you get your waiting out of the way when other activities are not yet open. Sure,
you might give up an hour of sleep or the chance to have a leisurely breakfast. This is worthwhile if the planned
activities hold greater value for you. ____20____ If you’re first in line at the museum, you can see the chapel and
still enjoy a packed day visiting other sites in Rome.
A. Only then is queuing up early a good choice.
B. Sightseeing joy outweighs breakfast comfort easily.
C. But the economist in me is not sure about this advice.
D. This is why you are better off considering opportunity cost.
E. Opportunity cost awareness improves personal satisfaction later.
F. Thinking about opportunity cost can make arriving an hour early seem sensible.
G. Your opportunity cost is the enjoyment, work, or wages you give up by waiting.

第二节(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The restoration of polar ecosystems, a task far more challenging than ___36___ (predict) by early
environmentalists, has emerged as a global priority in recent decades. Unlike conventional conservation projects,
___37___ focus on single species protection, this initiative aims to rebuild entire food webs, a goal that demands
___38___ (cooperate) across scientific disciplines and national borders. The Arctic fox, one of the region’s most
vulnerable species, ___39___ (push) to the brink of local extinction due to habitat loss and climate change, but
recent efforts ___40___ (yield) promising results so far.
What makes this project stand out is its emphasis on indigenous knowledge. Local communities, ___41___
(live) in harmony with polar regions for millennia, possess insights that modern science alone cannot provide. For
instance, their traditional methods of tracking ice floe movements have helped researchers identify areas where
reintroduction programs are ___42___ (likely) to succeed. Critics, however, warn that rapid intervention may
disrupt natural processes, ___43___ (argue) that ecosystems should be left to recover on their own.
___44___ debates continue to rage, one thing is certain: the fate of polar ecosystems is intertwined with
human actions. Only by combining scientific innovation with traditional wisdom ____45____ we ensure the
survival of these unique landscapes for future generations.

My brother Tim and I were examining a shoebox in our house. He took the top of the box off as he said we
could use this box to catch a cold breeze.
My family lived in a small desert town where the only breezes that blew were hot winds, especially in summer.
I didn’t understand what my brother was talking about, but he was several years older, so I trusted him.
“A story says kids can catch a cold breeze using a box and enjoy it whenever they want,” Tim continued.
“When you open the box, the cold wind will blow out and brush against your face.” I was surprised and asked
whether it was true. He gave a nod.
Because our parents would take us to the snow-covered, windy mountains for fun the following weekend, Tim
decided he’d secretly use this shoebox to catch a cool breeze. And he said he’d give the breeze-filled shoebox to
our parents as a gift on their birthday. Our parents shared a birthday, which fell on a hot August day. “I want to
give them a surprise letting them enjoy the cool wind,” Tim said joyfully. Greatly inspired, I also wanted to give
our parents the same gift and found another shoebox.
At the following weekend, our family went to the mountains. Tim and I ran back and forth with our boxes,
attempting to trap the cool breeze. After our boxes were full, we quickly closed the boxes. When we arrived home,
Tim stored our boxes in the garage refrigerator. “It’ll enable us to store the cold breeze,” he smiled. From that
moment on, I kept an eye on our boxes. My greatest worry was that they would be thrown out accidentally.
When summer arrived, our local temperature kept rising. And we had an unusually hot July day. One day,
when Tim and I sat before our door, attempting to cool off, the two shoeboxes kept coming to my mind. I was so
hot that I wanted to open my box to cool off.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Secretly, I headed to the garage, without noticing Tim following me.

If possible,

visit to enjoy the views from the top.

【答案】One possible version:
Secretly, I headed to the garage, without noticing Tim following me. My fingers trembled as I opened the
refrigerator and pulled out my shoebox. The heat outside made my heart race — I just needed a little relief. Just as
I lifted the lid, Tim’s hand gently stopped me. “Wait,” he whispered. “If you open it now, there’ll be nothing left for
Mom and Dad.” I froze, staring at him, sweat dripping down my forehead. He smiled softly and closed the box
again. “The surprise is worth the wait,” he said, placing it back carefully. I nodded, feeling a strange mix of
disappointment and pride. That moment taught me that sometimes, giving means holding on — even when you’re
burning up inside.
Finally, our parents’ birthday arrived, and Tim and I excitedly took out the shoeboxes. We presented them
with big grins, explaining how we’d captured mountain breezes just for them. Our parents exchanged amused
glances but played along, opening the boxes with exaggerated awe. A warm gust from the garage swirled out —
but they closed their eyes, pretending to feel cool wind. “Ah! So refreshing!” Dad sighed dramatically. Mom
hugged us tightly, her voice tender: “Best gift ever.” We knew the breeze wasn’t really cold anymore, but their joy
was real. And in that shared laughter, under the scorching August sun, our hearts felt cooler than any mountain
wind.
