The Great Green Wall
The Great Green Wall was built across the northern part of China. What is the Great Green Wall It is made up of strips of trees planted by humans.
Each year, dust storms blow a large amount of soil off the land. The situation is becoming increasingly serious. About 3,000 square kilometres of grassland are being covered by the Gobi Desert every year.
The Great Green Wall project started in 1978. By planting more trees, people are preventing the desert from expanding and the forest coverage is increasing in northern China.
By the year 2050, the Great Green Wall will be about 2,800 miles long.
