Long ago in China, terrible floods(洪水) often hit some places. The water covered the land, and people were in great trouble. After Yu’s father didn’t succeed in stopping the floods, Yu was ordered to stop these floods. Yu knew that the job was very important. So he decided to do well in the job and then save the people in danger.
Yu didn’t try to stop the water in a simple way. Instead, he spent a lot of time studying the land and the rivers. He spent years digging long channels(水渠) and building strong dams(坝) to make the water flow into the sea. He was really hard working. During his work, he passed by his home three times but didn’t go in because he was so focused on his work. After 13 years’ hard work, Yu succeeded in stopping the floods in the end.
This story gives us important lessons. First, it tells us not to give up. No matter how difficult things are, we should keep going, just like Yu. Second, it shows that finding a good way is very important. Yu thought carefully and found the right way to deal with the flood problem. If we do this, we can solve our problems and make our lives better, just as Yu successfully brought an end to the flood and brought safety to the people.

The day had started out as usual for Mrs Ito until the late afternoon, when the news of the tsunami waves came over the radio.

At last, 12:30 a.m. came as the radio warning had said and nothing happened. She could hear passing people say the tsunami waves must have missed the islands and they laughed as they were returning to their homes. Mrs Ito went into her living room and looked down the street. It was calm.

At sunrise, she found two boats far away. She saw in the distance a radio station tower light. She remained at peace and kept her head down. She thought that death was just a matter of time away. She thought the people on the boats hadn’t seen her. Then the boats came closer and closer. Mrs Ito was seen and saved.

An earthquake may happen at any time. It’s best for us to know what to do, where to go for safety and who to contact during an earthquake. The following information will help you.
语篇组合训练
First, prepare your personal earthquake bag. Collect these items and keep them somewhere near you: water, food, medicine, a mobile phone, a torch(手电筒), personal toiletries(洗漱用品), a blanket and some money.
Second, drop, hide, hold on and contact. Drop to the floor and protect your head and neck with your arms. Hide yourself beside something like a table, a bed and so on. Hold on to the furniture so that you won’t move away during the earthquake. Contact family or friends to tell them where you are.
Third, never do these things: standing too close to the buildings or standing under trees or signs. It’s better for you to stand in an open space. Never get too close to the power lines(电线) because you may be badly hurt by electricity.

About 2,300 years ago, the area around Chengdu had bad floods(洪水) in spring every year. Luckily, the Qin governor(太守), Li Bing, was a water engineer. The king of Qin provided the money and asked the governor to solve the problem.
The usual method to avoid flooding is to build a wall across the river, called a dam. However, the king had also asked Li Bing to make sure that ships could still use the river because the king needed to send food to his army. So Li Bing studied the situation and came up with a plan—a plan that still works today!
Helped by his son, and tens of thousands of workers from the area, Li Bing built a man made island in the middle of the river. This island was shaped like a fish and it divided the water into an inner river(内河) and an outer river. The inner river was deeper than but not as wide as the outer river. It took four years to build the island. Li Bing also cut a new channel(运河) through Mount Yulei. This channel would take water away to irrigate(灌溉) the land in the flat farmland below. The rock of the mountain was very hard and difficult to cut. Cutting the channel took eight years!
After Li Bing’s work was finished, there were no more floods, and the Dujiangyan irrigation system(灌溉系统) allowed the farmers to grow more and more food. Today, scientists and visitors from all over the world come to look at this wonderful example of engineering. This work and the name of Li Bing live on.
