体裁:记叙文 ◆主题:人与社会——与德国朋友相处的故事 难度:★★ 建议用时:8 min
During my summer vacation in 2019, I had a wonderful eight day trip to Berlin with my classmates. During the stay, I learnt a lot about Germany.
A year before that, my German friend, Maurice, had come to China, and we spent a weekend together. That experience was unforgettable. Maurice couldn’t speak English very well, and he was very shy, so it was hard for me to talk with him. On my way to Berlin, I was a bit nervous that I would face the same difficulties again. But things went smoother(更顺畅的) than I had expected.
I tried my best to use my poor German to communicate with his family. Maurice had a younger sister, Emily, and a younger brother, Felix, who were very outgoing and cute. I talked to them about China, but sometimes I needed to use Google Translate. The family also had two dogs, who always crawled up(爬上) on my legs and played with me.
A few days later, we got familiar with each other. On the weekend, we walked a long way to Siegess ule, also known as Berlin Victory Column. Maurice’s father shared many stories of the Wars of German Unification, which gave me a new understanding of Germany.
Though we didn’t know each other’s languages well, we still had a wonderful time together.

体裁:说明文 ◆主题:人与社会——不同的新年庆祝方式 难度:★★★ 建议用时:8 min
New Year is a wonderful time for family and friends to welcome the new year. Celebrations worldwide include music, special food, and fireworks, though at different times.
In the UK, many get together in London on December 31 to see Big Ben and count down to midnight. They then sing Auld Lang Syne to remember loved ones. In the US, a famous tradition is the ball drop in New York’s Times Square. Huge crowds watch and wish each other “Happy New Year!” when the ball reaches the bottom.
The Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is highly important. Customs include sweeping houses, hanging couplets(对联), setting off fireworks, and performing lion or dragon dances. A key tradition is the family reunion(团圆) dinner on New Year’s Eve, where generations(世代) get together to share food and express wishes, stressing the importance of family in Chinese culture.
In Egypt, people celebrate Sham El Nessim in April, meaning “smelling the breeze”, to mark spring’s arrival. As the weather brightens and nature flowers, people paint eggs symbolizing(象征) new life, enjoy picnics, dance, sing, and watch plays.
Although New Year festivals differ around the world, they share a common belief: it is a special time to connect with family and friends and express hope for the coming year.

Chinese food is very famous in the world. Chinese people think food is one of the most important things in their lives. They do not greet each other with “How are you?” but they usually ask, “Have you eaten?”
Since table manners are part of Chinese cooking culture, Chinese people still follow their table manners today. There is a seat for the “guest of honor” or the oldest person in the family. In most parts of China, the “seat of honor” is usually the one facing the front door of the room. The “seat of honor” can also be the one in the middle facing east of the room if there is no seat facing the door.
As for the host, he may take the most convenient seat. It is always the nearest to the kitchen or service door. It is better to sit down after the elder or the “guest of honor” sits down. Guests should wait for the host to invite them to get seated.
Chinese people like having meals together and they put all the dishes on a round table. There is sometimes a round rotating disc(旋转盘) in the centre of the dining table. It makes sure that all the diners(用餐者) can enjoy the meal and feel respected.

There were no Africans or Asians in my school. And there wasn’t anyone from South America. It was mainly an American community. As a family from the Middle East, we seemed quite different from other people in the community. We had looks that were different; we had food that was different; we had holiday customs that were not the same as everybody else’s.
My mother didn’t say too much. But a week later, my teacher told us that we were going to have a special food event. The next day at lunch, to my surprise, came my mother with boxes of Middle Eastern food. The teacher introduced her. “This is Mrs Nimen, Tom’s mum.” My mother took out all the food and served the kids. “Try some fataya,” she said. “These are little bread pies with meat in them.” She had also prepared bread for the whole class to take home. Now even the kids who had laughed about my lunch were enjoying my mum’s food!

There was once a King who was very unusual. No matter how many times he gave orders, his people never followed what he said. He was peaceful and didn’t want to punish anyone, so he lost all his authority(权威).
The King asked for help from the smartest old teacher in the kingdom, but even the teacher couldn’t find a solution.
One day, a young man passing by heard about the problem and quickly went to the King. He said he knew the solution and gave the King two small pieces of paper.
“These are spells(咒语),” said the young man. “Use the first before asking someone to do something and the second after they’ve done it. If they smile, it means the spell worked.”
The King decided to have a try. He saw a servant named Apolonio carrying a large turkey and said, “Please, Apolonio, let me see that amazing turkey.” Surprised to hear the King say “please” for the first time, the servant came to him. After looking at the turkey, the King said, “Thank you, Apolonio, you may go.” The servant left with a smile on his face.
The King was amazed. The old teacher asked how the magic worked. The young man smiled and explained, “I learned this magic at school. My teacher always said that with good manners, you can get anything. All your King needed was politeness to earn(赢得) respect.”
From then on, the King used “please” and “thank you” and ruled happily with kindness and respect.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you’ll come to China. You said you wanted to learn about the customs in China. Now, let me tell you something about them.
China is a country with a long history and there are many customs in China. When you meet friends, you should greet each other and just say“hello”, instead of shaking hands frequently. When you eat at a friend’s home, you should not make noise when eating. Don’t knock bowls or plates with chopsticks. This is impolite. If your friends invite you to the party, you’d better arrive a little earlier, 5 to 10 minutes in advance. You can bring a small gift to your friends. But your friends won’t open presents immediately. This is different from other foreign countries.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If you obey these, I think you’ll have a great time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
