The blue whale is the largest and heaviest animal on earth. It can weigh as much as 200 tons. Many people like watching blue whales swim, and they think it is one of the most beautiful things to see. Blue whales live in all oceans except the Arctic Ocean. They eat a lot, but they eat some of the tiniest animals in the ocean. Blue whales can live up to 90 years. When a blue whale dies at sea, it becomes food for many kinds of animals living in and around the sea. This food lasts for over a year and it helps to create a lively and healthy ecosystem. Blue whales play an important role in our world, so we must protect them.蓝鲸能活到90岁。当一头蓝鲸在海洋中死去，它会成为生活在海洋及周边的许多种动物的食物。这些食物能维持一年多，而且有助于创造一个生机勃勃、健康的生态系统。蓝鲸在我们的世界中发挥着重要作用，因此我们必须保护它们。

【辨析】except, but与besides
except “除……之外”，强调所排除的内容不包括在内，含有“减去”的意思。
but “除……之外”，常用于nothing、all、 anything、anyone、everything、everyone等词之后。
besides “除……之外(还)”，包括besides后面的内容，含有“加上”的意思。
