What
This period consists of a series of brief dialogues and statements. They are about things like daily rules and behaviors, mainly focusing on the usage of imperative sentences and modal verbs. These dialogues and statements cover various life conditions such as queuing, pet feeding, classroom rules, library etiquette, and bus safety, etc.
Why
The conversations in real life make students better understand the application of the grammatical structures in actual communication, thereby enhancing their language proficiency and communication skills. Moreover, these dialogues also carry educational significance regarding social rules and moral norms, which helps cultivate students’ sense of social responsibility and moral awareness.
How
The grammar learning in this period is carried out gradually through a series of carefully designed dialogues and statements. Students are directly shown how to issue instructions or make suggestions and are guided to understand the role of modal verbs in expressing obligations or necessity.

Procedures

Step 1 Grammar learning Leading in Play the video clip from “Frozen”. Ask students “What do they have in common ” Guide them to analyze the lyrics and find out the imperatives and modal verbs in the sentences. Observing and summarizing ①Lead students to read the sentences in 3a and ask them two questions: Which are imperative sentences Which sentences contain modal verbs What are they ②Explain the function and usage of imperative sentences and modal verbs. Practicing Ask students to finish the task in 3b and check the answers. 1. Enjoy the song and find out the imperative sentences and modal verbs. 2. ①Read the sentences in 3a, and answer the questions. ②Learn the function and usage of imperative sentences and modal verbs. 3. Finish the exercise in 3b. To guide students to focus on imperative sentences. To help students actively explore the grammatical rules.
Step 2 Group work Learning signs Show the following signs to students and ask them what’re the meanings of them. Then explain them (using Do not… / No doing… / You can’t / mustn’t … structures). Ask students to finish the activity 3c and guide students to describe the signs. Making rules Ask students to work in pairs to design a poster to show rules for one place in 3d. Share their signs in class and explain what they mean. 1. ①Look at the signs and guess the meanings of them. ②Finish activity 3c and learn the structures of Do not… / No doing… / You can’t / mustn’t …. 2. Design a poster in groups, brainstorm three rules for one of the places and draw signs to show the rules. Share their signs in class and explain what they mean. In the library, we must keep quiet. We mustn’t make noise. We can’t eat anything. We must return the books in time ... To guide students to understand the meanings of signs and talk about them in daily life. To guide students to understand the importance of rules and cultivate their critical thinking ability.
Step 3 Homework In order to make our school a better place, you are invited to give suggestions on our school rules. Please send a letter to the student union of Grade 7. You can either improve the current rules or add more new rules. Your suggestions will be adopted if they are plete the homework. To help consolidate what students have learned.
