What
This section concerns about rules. Alice sent a letter for help. She listed many rules that must be obeyed in daily life. She expressed her helplessness and dissatisfaction with these rules. Then, Dr. Know replied, explaining from the perspective of the importance of rules for personal growth and social order, and encouraging Alice to see the free space beyond the rules, such as using mobile phones at home, relaxing after completing homework, and gathering with friends on weekends.
Why
The letters are written to explore the role of rules in personal life and social order, as well as how to find space for personal freedom while abiding by rules. The theme emphasizes to help readers understand the necessity of rules, and face the restrictions of rules in life with a more positive attitude. Through the letters between Alice and Dr. Know, readers can feel the constraining effect of rules on personal behavior, and also understand the importance of rules in maintaining social order and promoting personal growth.
How
The reading material can be used as a writing model. It not only helps students review some target sentences to express rules, but also helps them know how to talk about rules as well as give advice. Through Dr Know’s specific explanations, readers can understand the logic and necessity behind the rules. In the concluding part, Dr. Know emphasized the importance of rules for social order with the concise and powerful sentence “Remember: No rules, no order!”, leaving a deep impression on readers and getting down to the theme of this unit.

Step 1 Leading in 1. Set a situation. T: My friend is a “School Mental Health Counselor”, do you know about this job If students have problems at school, they ask him for advice. When you need help in your life, who will you ask for help 2. Ask students the following questions. What are some of the rules in your home What do you think of them If your family rules cannot make you happy, what will you do 3. Ask students to read the letters and answer the following questions. Why is Alice unhappy Who makes the rules for Alice Does Dr Know think Alice is right 1. Think and answer the teacher’s questions. S: I also talk to our school counselor to ask for advice … 2. Answer the questions. S1: I have to wake up before 6 am. I can’t watch TV on weekdays. I think they are strict. Maybe I will talk with my friends about my family rules. … 3. Read the letters and answer the questions. S1: The girl is unhappy. She’s upset because of her family rules. … To stimulate students’ interest in learning, and activate the connection between students’ experience and the teaching content of this lesson.
Step 2 Reading Read for the main idea. Ask students to read the letters quickly and underline the sentences that show the main ideas of the letters. There are too many rules in my life. I know some rules are important, but this is awful. There are many rules in life! But they can help you to become a better person. I know it’s hard, but rules can help to make the world better. Remember: No rules, no order! Read for the details. Ask students to read the letters again and complete Alice’s notes about her problems in 1c. Read for the structure Read the letter to Dr Know in 2a, and complete it using can, have to/must, or can’t / mustn’t. 4. Summarize Ask students to summarize the structure of a reply letter giving some advice. 1. Read the letters quickly and underline the sentences that show the main ideas of the letters. 2. Read the letter again and complete Alice’s notes about her problems in 1c. 3. Finish 2a and check the answers. 4. Outline how to write a reply letter giving some advice. Beginning: Dear Dr Know: Can you help me … Body: I must/I can’t/have to... Ending: What should I do To make students get a better understanding of the two letters. To guide students to utilize the tool of mind maps to integrate and sort out the key information in the articles.
