In July 2020, Leslie Shogren took her husband and four sons from the suburbs of Chicago to Semicolon Books, a downtown bookstore, to celebrate her birthday. When she checked out, she asked the cashier (出纳员) if she was Danielle Moore, the owner. Smiling, Moore said yes and then gave Shogren a birthday card signed by all the workers of the bookstore, which left Shogren surprised. Actually, she had only messaged the store on Facebook to ask about its hours and mentioned her birthday casually. Now, she and her family are regular customers.
Since 2019, Moore has put her heart into running the store. Shelves reach from floor to ceiling, with front-facing books displayed like art. The walls are covered with prints, paintings and fortable long sofas, let visitors read, and handmade pillows (枕头) with famous writers’ images make it feel like home. “We wanted it to be comfortable, warm and full of love,” Moore said.
Courtenay Joseph started visiting in June 2020 to support Black-owned businesses. As a mom now, she often brings her young child. “People talk to each other here. There’s a sense of connection,” she said.
Moore wants the store to be a “third space” — not home or work, but a place to feel like you are part of it. She grew up in a shelter with only one book, so she knows what it’s like to have no books. Through its ClearTheShelves program, the store has given 13,000 free books to Chicago students. It has also prepared books for 52 schools and donated to 27 local groups. “We want to give back what we earn,” Moore said.
Semicolon Books now makes it onto the list of 2025’s Nicest Places in America.
24. Why was Shogren surprised by Moore’s action

“Help me please... I can’t calm down without lying on the ground and shouting at the top of my voice for a good 20 minutes... Should I get medical help ” This cry for help came from a post (帖子) on the social media site Reddit. The poster, Beerbohm, had been suffering from fearful moments for several days after smoking marijuana (大麻). Usually, public health workers never notice posts like this — they are too busy with other tasks. But in a recent test, an AI tool called Waldo was able to notice his case.
Waldo spent time looking through more than 430,000 old Reddit posts that talked about using marijuana. It marked Beerbohm’s post and over 28,000 other posts as possibly describing unexpected or harmful bad effects. To check if Waldo was right, researchers looked at 250 of the posts it had marked. They found that 86% of those posts were indeed real stories of bad experiences with marijuana products, as they reported on September 30 in PLOS Digital Health. If this kind of AI checking becomes common, it could help public health workers protect people from harmful products.
Experts said government groups like the U.S. CDC usually get information about certain drugs’ bad effects through surveys, not by watching social media. But many people can’t see a doctor easily or don’t know how to officially report bad product experiences — so they share their health problems online instead. The team behind Waldo chose to focus on marijuana because it’s very popular, especially among young people, but still not well controlled. In earlier tests, Waldo did better than ChatGPT: ChatGPT marked 18times more wrong posts as harmful (saying a post had side effects when it didn’t). But Waldo still wasn't as good as human reviewers. Right now, no one knows if Waldo can work well for other things like other drugs or vitamins. Even so, experts hope tools like, Waldo can one day help connect more people of various problems with medical workers who can give help.
28. Why does the writer mention Beerholm's post
A. To tell how to use marijuana. B. To introduce an AI tool Waldo.
C. To show panic attacks are bad. D. To advise always seeing a doctor.
29. What did Waldo do in the test
A. It wrote 430,000 marijuana posts. B. It taught workers to use AI.
C. It marked over 28,000 possible harm posts. D. It helped 250 people with health issues.
30. How do groups like the U. S. CDC get information about certain drugs’ bad effect
A. By using Waldo. B. By doing surveys.
C. By checking social media. D. By asking young people.
31. What do we know about Waldo
A. It works for all drugs. B. It’s much better than human beings.
C. It’s worse than ChatGPT. D. It may help those in need reach health workers.
D
We are all filled with the wish for having satisfying relationships, which will bring some meaning to our lives and make us happy. We try so hard to find true happiness that we often forget that it actually lies within us.
Yes, that’s right. By now we have heard more than a million times that true happiness lies within ourselves. You have to love yourself first in order to love someone else. We have heard in many encouraging talks that self-love is the foundation of a happy life. But have you ever wondered that with so many advocates of self-love, why haven’t we been able to love ourselves
One of the reasons for our failure to love ourselves is that we have been taught to be selfless from the start of time. The minute we start thinking about ourselves, everyone around us makes it their personal task to remind us of how selfish we are being. But there is nothing wrong with putting your needs and yourself first. Self-love is not selfish. It only helps us better understand which efforts are worth making!
Self-love is the base of all your healthy relationships. The stronger your base is, the more difficult it will be for winds to knock down the branches. Before exploring this idea, it is very important to understand what self-love truly means. With such a thin line between being selfish and self-loving, it is too easy to fall on the darker side.
32. The underlined word “advocates” in the passage probably means ________
A. supporters B. learners C. teachers D. enemies
33. Why do people fail to love themselves according to the passage
A. They are too busy with their daily lives.
B. They know the meaning of self-love.
C. They don't have enough time to love themselves.
D. They are troubled by those saying we’re too selfish.
34. We can infer about self-love from the passage that________.
A. it is exactly similar to being selfish. B. it is unnecessary for a happy life.
C. it makes the value of certain efforts clear. D. it is liked by most people around us.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards self-love
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Uninterested.

When I was a boy, I always wore turtleneck shirts because I was so sensitive and shy. I worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. I was younger than everyone else because my good marks had allowed me to skip second grade, but this added nothing to my already low self-confidence.
When I was 14, my parents divorced (离婚). I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊) and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated and alone. One day, my aunt called. This seemed like a miracle to me. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on my birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest, and she thought I should try it, too. She told me she firmly believed I could perform on stage like the other kids since she had seen me do skits (幽默小品) for the family at Christmas.
I was a little taken aback, Me On stage In a public speaking contest To agree would be contrary to my entire shy personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds and agreed to enter the contest. All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in Ville d’Anjou, where the competition would take place. I was taken by an energy I had never felt before. The hours and the obstacles no longer mattered. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and impact my marks. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.

原文:W: Hi, everyone. I’m Millie. I’m often asked the question how I became a reporter. Everybody expected me to become a lawyer like my mother. In my last year of school, I visited a job advisor and I drove her crazy with my choices. My first choice was a chocolate tester. But she told me that chocolate testers don’t just sit around eating chocolate. They must also be good at marketing. That was my weakness, so I gave up that idea. Next, I had the idea of opening a pet shop. However, once when I took my dog Philip into a pet shop, I noticed that my dog tried to bite the owner. You can imagine what happened next. Anyway, at the end of the school year, I decided to become a reporter. That’s my story.

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. C

As is widely seen, nowadays, many of us students fail to manage our weekends properly. Playing video games has become a widespread addiction; many get up nearly at noon, not doing homework until the last hour, leading to a tiring start of a new week.
There must be a change to this. Not only should we make a short plan on Friday nights, dividing time between study and rest, but we should also balance learning with our healthy hobbies. Let’s just tear ourselves away from video games. Meanwhile, helping with housework to learn life skills can’t be more beneficial.
Weekends are precious for self-improvement. Let’s start managing them well now to build a better future!

【答案】
Four months later, the big night arrived. The auditorium buzzed with excitement, and my palms sweated as I waited backstage. When my name echoed through the hall, I gripped the edge of my speech notes and stepped into the spotlight. At first, my voice shook, but as I talked about overcoming shyness and finding courage in Aunt Ginette’s belief, I relaxed. The hours of practice kicked in, and I spoke steadily, pouring my heart into every word. When I finished, the audience cheered loudly. I bowed, and through the bright lights, I caught a glimpse of my father. He was sitting there, watching me intently.
When I saw my father’s face, his eyes were glowing with pride. He walked over quickly and patted my shoulder firmly. “You were amazing,” he said, his voice warm. “I should have supported you sooner instead of worrying about grades.” His words hit me deeply, erasing the distance that had lingered between us. I smiled, feeling a weight lift off my chest. Though I only won third prize, it didn’t matter. That night, I gained more than a trophy. I found confidence and reconnected with my father. The shy boy in turtlenecks was gone; I’d finally found the courage to be myself.
