She turns her pain into gain by trying new things, finding new success and changing her view on failure.
Read the diaries carefully and answer the questions.
1. How did the writer feel in this diary
She felt very bad.
2. Why was the writer in such great pain
Because basketball was her dream, she had practised hard, and the failure made her dream come to nothing.
3. How does the writer feel about her failure now
She feels different now — she couldn’t help laughing at her heartbreaking words then and no longer sees it as a big deal.
It tells us that basketball used to be important to the writer, but it isn’t her main focus anymore. Her life and interests have changed.
4. What does the word “was” in “Basketball was really a big deal for me.” tell us
5. Why did she start swimming

8. Has the writer ever felt that bad about failure again Why or why not
It means “in a new and positive way”.
9. Do you think the writer’s story gives good advice Why
Yes, because it shows that failure can be a chance to learn and grow — by staying open to new experiences, we can turn pain into gain.
First Diary:
pain
“This has been my dream since I was a little girl!”
Second Diary:
to gain
heartbreaking
couldn’t help laughing
was so hurt→swam→fell completely in love→won several competitions /made a lot of friends,
本段通过格言式论断 “failure is a part of life” 与经典比喻 “When one door closes, another opens.”,将失败普遍化、暂时化,揭示“有失就有得”的辩证关系。

Answer the questions.
1 From what sentences can you see that basketball was really a big deal for the writer
2 If something “falls upon” you, do you think it’s a good thing or bad thing
3 What’s the meaning of “When one door closes, another opens.”
It means that if you miss one chance, another will come along. Don’t lose hope!
I think it's a bad thing because the expression “falls upon” is used by the writer to describe failure happening to people. This suggests that when something “falls upon” you, it is usually unexpected and unpleasant, like experiencing failure.
1 What’s the writer’s understanding of failure
The writer thinks that failure is a part of life but it lasts just a moment.
2 Have you ever experienced a terrible moment Share it with the class.
Yes, I have experienced a terrible moment when I failed an exam. I felt very disappointed in myself at first. However, I realised that I hadn’t tried hard enough, so I changed my attitude and studied harder. As a result, I passed the next exam.

Growing up will never be an easy thing.
We need to look at challenges the right way.
Failure is a part of life.
Failure lasts just a moment.
When one door closes, another opens.
Life is waiting for us with many other surprises.
Tomorrow is another day.
Write the passage.
Last year, I failed to join the school band. During the tryout, I was so nervous that a big mistake was made. Everyone looked at me and my face turned red.
I was hurt by my failure. It was painful because I knew I could play well. I was just too shy to show my true ability.
However, I didn’t want to give up, so I practised harder and performed in different public settings. Slowly, I got over my fear of the stage. I also started to think about failure in a different way. It became a valuable lesson and made me stronger. Later, I joined the band successfully.
Now I understand that failure is a part of life. It helps us improve. Don’t be afraid of it!
