It happened during the Warring States Period (a historical period in ancient China).
The King of Zhao、The King of Qin、Lin Xiangru.
The King of Qin wanted to obtain the valuable jade He Shi Bi from Zhao, offering 15 cities in exchange — but Zhao feared Qin would take the jade without giving the cities, while refusing might lead to Qin attacking Zhao. Lin Xiangru was sent to resolve this dilemma (securing the jade while avoiding conflict).

He told the King of Qin there was a tiny flaw on the jade and asked to show it to the king, so the king handed the jade back to him.
After getting the jade back, he stepped back to the pillars and threatened to smash the jade (and himself) against the pillar if Qin forced him — this forced the King of Qin to apologize and temporarily back down.
