Acupuncture is the use of needles to treat people’s health problems.
Acupuncture针灸 is a way of medical treatment with a long history. About 4,000 years ago, ancient Chinese began to treat patients by stimulating the body’s surface at specific points with something like needles. 一种历史悠久的医学治疗方法。大约4000年前，古代中国人开始用针之类的东西刺激体表的特定部位来治疗病人。
The first record of acupuncture was found in the oldest medical textbook in the world called Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine (Huang Di Nei Jing). Today, acupuncture proves to be safe and effective. 针灸的最早记录出现在世界上最古老的医学教科书《黄帝内经》中。今天，针灸被证明是安全有效的。
Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by meridians.

These meridians create an energy flow (Qi) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, thereby improving health.

How does acupuncture work

How acupuncture actually works is not clearly understood. For example, there are different theories trying to explain how it eases pain(缓解疼痛), but no agreement has been reached. One theory explaining this phenomenon suggests that acupuncture blocks pain signals from reaching the brain . Another theory relates acupuncture to the production of a substance in the body which can reduce pain.
