When Rosie Paulik was a child heading off to summer camp, her dad, Buz Ecker, began writing her letters every single day. He kept up the practice through her college years and even after she moved back home to Cincinnati.
But this past July, she noticed her retired father had become “aimless” and she could tell “he wasn't feeling great.” She thought of a solution. She posted a TikTok, seeing if anyone would be interested in receiving a handwritten note from her dad. The response was overwhelming. She quickly got over 1,000 requests for letters. Thus, the Dad Letter Project was born. Her dad, who is spending the summer in Michigan, was immediately on board. But she realized he might need help in accomplishing this task. So, they brought on three additional “Dad Staff Writers” to assist in fulfilling these requests.
To receive a handwritten letter from one of the dads, Paulik said requests can be filled out on their website, where people can include their personal information, and what they would like their letter to focus on.” Requests will be matched with one of the dads who will personally address the letter and fund the stamp and the postage themselves.
The demand has been so great, Buz admits he's still working through thousands of requests. He said each request is different: some are mourning the loss of their own father and others are wanting to hear a funny story. “Sometimes, you just need a dad to remind you that you’re doing great, to offer life advice, or to tell you a joke. It’s like a hug, but on paper,” the project's website said.
24.What made Rosie start the Dad Letter Project
A.The response from social media. B.Her hope to share her father's letters.
C.Her father's desire to start a business. D.The thought of spreading handwritten letters.
25.What do the underlined words “on board” in paragraph 2 imply
A.Her father ignored the idea. B.Her father supported the proposal.
C.Her father received a handwritten letter. D.Her father started a meeting with other dads.
26.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The procedure of creating the website. B.The way of providing fund for the project.
C.The steps of becoming a dad staff writer. D.The process for requesting a dad's letter.
27.Why are the letters in great demand
A.They are free of charge. B.They teach people how to write better.
C.People now prefer written communication. D.People need emotional support from a father figure.
In a recent public event in Hong Kong, sign language interpreter Wanzy Lo introduced herself with a distinctive gesture: three fingers placed horizontally (横着地) on her cheek. This was not merely a symbol for a cat lover and also forms the letter “W” for her name. This creative mix gives her a unique sign name in the world of sign language.
Lo, Sign Language Officer of the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, participated in teaching the public to create their own names in sign language during an activity to promote the communication method late last month. She believes sign language is about sharing the full meaning and feelings behind the words to help the deaf audience understand and connect. This skill was key when she interpreted for the Hong Kong Film Awards, a live show. “Film is an art,” Lo says. “So, our work must also be artistic, sharing not just words but the emotions in them.” During songs and moving speeches, she used stronger facial expressions to pull the audience into the moment.
The demand for such skilled interpreters is rapidly growing. Apart from cultural events, sign language is now also used in important government meetings. The role is exceptionally challenging, requiring quick thinking, vast general knowledge, and the ability to perform under the pressure of live television. However, there are not enough interpreters. Currently, there are only just over 50 qualified interpreters in Hong Kong to serve a substantial community, a number that highlights the serious shortage of workers.
Timmy Chan, head of the Sign Language Center of the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, says, “Sign language interpreters are an important bridge between people with hearing loss and the outside world.” And he hopes that more people will join the ranks of sign language interpretation so that those with hearing disabilities can benefit.
28.How did Wanzy Lo create her sign name
A.By copying the sign for “cat” directly. B.By letting the public choose it for her.
C.By mixing a personal interest with a letter. D.By following the standard naming rules.
29.Why does Lo use stronger facial expressions while interpreting
A.To make the performance more amusing. B.To communicate emotions more effectively.
C.To meet the requirements of the film directors. D.To show the difficulty of live TV interpretation.
30.Which best describes the job of a sign language interpreter
A.Boring. B.Well- paid. C.Demanding. D.Dangerous.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.The high demand for sign language interpretation in HK.
B.The technical skills required to become an interpreter in HK.
C.The life story of a successful sign language interpreter in HK.
D.The value and challenges of sign language interpretation in HK.
Better Connectivity Increases Reef Abundance
Research led by the University of Oxford has found that the movement and exchange of water between different parts of the ocean — oceanographic connectivity — is a key influence for fish abundance (丰富性) across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The findings have been published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
In the study, connectivity had a special impact on plant-eating reef (礁石) fish groups, which offer several key benefits to reefs. For example, they eat seaweeds that compete with corals (珊瑚). This shows that decision-makers should add connectivity to ocean protected area management across countries. It is especially important in the human-pressured WIO region. Most coral reefs there may face yearly coral bleaching (白化) by the middle of the century, even under optimistic climate change models. Protecting reefs is necessary in this area, especially for local communities. They rely heavily on reefs: small-sized fisheries provide up to 99% of their protein and about 82% of their household income. As the population grows fast, locals face more and more risks from climate change. It could destroy reefs through coral bleaching.
The researchers developed a map of oceanographic connectivity to simplify complex oceanographic models. Typically, across the study reef sites, medium connectivity levels were associated with higher fish abundance, rather than high levels. High connectivity may help with the spread of coral seaweeds but can come with side effects, such as increased foreign species.
Lead author Michael Bonsall added, “Our work emphasizes how crucial this link is between ocean currents and fish ecology for understanding the broader impact of environmental change and fishing rules on sensitive coral reef fish systems.”
The researchers now plan to explore the impacts of human activities and find out how environmental and oceanographic factors are predicted to change under different climate change models, and how fish abundance will be affected.
32.What is the role of plant-eating reef fish in coral reef ecosystems
A.They stop the spread of other fish. B.They help maintain coral reefs.
C.They reduce ocean temperatures. D.They contribute to seaweed growth.
33.Why is protecting reefs in the WIO particularly significant
A.Reefs are critical to the local economy. B.The region lacks large-sized fisheries.
C.Fish production is naturally low in this region. D.It is beneficial to oceanographic connectivity.
34.What can be learned about medium connectivity levels
A.They worsen coral bleaching. B.They result in larger fish population.
C.They bring about foreign fish greatly. D.They improve the nutritional value of fish.
35.What is one goal of future research by the team
A.To establish new protected areas. B.To explore the impact of high connectivity.
C.To study human influences on fish abundance. D.To create connectivity maps for all ocean regions.
Even if you’re aware of how important getting a good night’s rest can be, falling asleep can be difficult due to heightened examination anxiety. 36 Here are a few universal techniques that can put anyone on the path towards a peaceful sleep.
Calm down your mind. The first step in achieving a good sleep the night before an important exam is to calm down the mind. 37 For example, take deep breathing exercises, or repeatedly tell yourself that one night will not make any major impacts on how well you do on the exam.
Wake up at the same time. It is equally important to rise at your regular time on the exam day. 38 Remember, oversleeping can lead to severe bedtime struggles at night. So just stick to the regular sleep schedule and things will be fine.
39 During favorable weather, nighttime walks can be good for your sleep. Taking a walk can also help you gather positive thoughts, remember important details, and breathe in fresh air. 40
A.Work out regularly.
B.Take a nighttime walk.
C.So how can you sleep well before an exam
D.Why not prepare for the exam the night before
E.The time spent outdoors can also lead to a satisfying sleep once you jump into bed.
F.Whatever the exam is, it is important to practice active mind-relaxation techniques.
G.This can signal to the brain that it is just another day and that there’s no cause for alarm.

Tom, a senior high school student, loved extreme sports, especially rock climbing. He joined a rock climbing club. Every week there, he held tight to rough cracks with hard fingers, put his boots on small footholds, and pulled his body up with slow, controlled moves. With every climb, Tom’s skills and confidence grew.
However, his father, Robert, strongly disagreed with this hobby. Robert had always been careful. His life was influenced by the memory of a childhood friend who had been seriously injured in a climbing accident. He couldn’t shake the fear of losing his own son to a similar end. “You should avoid doing these dangerous sports,” Robert said. They had many heated arguments, each one worsening their relationship.
One day, they drove to visit Tom’s grandparents. They started arguing again in the car. Suddenly, they heard loud noises ahead. Many people stood in a circle, shouting and crying. Thinking something terrible had happened, Robert and Tom stopped the car right away. Even though they disagreed, both wanted to help.
They pushed through the crowd and learned a 5-year-old boy had fallen into a deep dry well while playing. The well was a dark hole with sharp stones around it. The boy’s mother lay on the ground crying, while his father talked to rescuers on the phone, his voice shaking with worry. People around tried to comfort them, but their words did not help in such situation.
Soon, the rescue team arrived. But there was a problem: the well’s opening was too narrow— only a very thin person could fit. All rescuers were big and strong, so no one could go in. The rescue was stuck. The boy’s parents grew more worried. They looked down the well, calling their son’s name over and over, but heard no answer.

【原文】Good morning, everyone. Today let’s talk about how to use online resources to learn English effectively. Firstly, on the Internet there are two places where you can practice your writing: message boards and live chat rooms. Live chat rooms are a great tool. They are excellent for improving your fluency because you have to type and respond quickly to others. A message board is good for both fluency and accuracy because you can think and prepare before you write. Next, let’s consider listening. The Internet may be better than the radio as you can listen again and again. You should visit a good news site such as the BBC. BBC radio is an incredible resource. The ability to listen repeatedly and to pause allows you to put into practice the advice I gave. However, to really improve, you have to be an active listener. Make notes. Try to write down the main points and new vocabulary. Finally, visit the website for the textbook. There are extra practice exercises and reading materials. Okay, that’s all for today. Thank you for listening.

Good morning classmates. Today, I would like to talk about food waste problem in our school. It is heartbreaking to see so much food thrown away every day. To make a change, I think we should only take as much food as we can eat. And if we can’t finish our meals, we can take the leftovers with us.
Food is precious. It represents farmers’ hard work. Join me and make a difference! Let’s work together to value every grain and reduce food waste.
Thank you!

Tom stepped forward without hesitation. “I can do it,” he declared firmly, his eyes reflecting both determination and confidence. The rescuers, initially hesitant, quickly assessed Tom’s slim build and agreed to give him a chance. Tom began his descent into the dark well. The crowd held its breath as he carefully maneuvered down the rocky walls, his rock climbing skills proving invaluable. Finally, he reached the bottom and found the frightened boy. Tom signaled to the rescuers above to pull them up.
While everyone cheered, Robert rushed over and hugged Tom closely. Tears streamed down his face as he whispered, “I’m so proud of you, son. I was wrong to hold you back from what you love.” Tom, smiling through his own tears, replied, “It’s okay, Dad. I understand your fear, but I knew I could help.” The bond between father and son, once strained by disagreement, was now stronger than ever. Robert realized that sometimes, courage and passion could lead to incredible acts of heroism, and he vowed to support Tom’s dreams from then on.
