1. The background of the conversation:
Hongli is going to have dinner at her friend’s house in the UK. She is feeling worried about English table manners. And she is seeking advice.
2. Reading task:
Find out why Hongli is worried about the dinner.
Identify the specific advice Sam gives her.
Sam: What’s wrong, Hongli
Hongli: I’m having dinner at my friend’s house tonight. But English table manners are so confusing that I’m a little worried.
Sam: Well, I’m from London. Ask me everything!
Hongli: Thanks! Well, first, should I bring something
Sam: Yes. Bring a small gift, but don’t bring food unless the host asks you to. And remember to wait for the host to start before you eat.
Read the conversation. Why is Hongli worried?

Language points
But English table manners are so confusingthat I'm a little
worried. 但是英式餐桌礼仪太令人困惑了,我有点儿担心。
(1)manners 作名词,意为“礼仪”,一般以复数形式出现,单数形manner意为“方式”。
(2)“It's good/ bad manners to... ”表示“……是好/坏的礼仪”。

他的良好举止受到了长辈的称赞。
2. Bring a small gift, but don't bring food unless the host asks you to. 带一份小礼物,但除非主人要求,否则不要带食物。
unless作连词,意为“除非;如果不”,引导条件状语从句,相当于if...not。如果主句为一般将来时或主句中的谓语含有情态动词,unless 引导的从句常用一般现在时。
I sleep with the window open unless it's really cold. = I sleep with the window open if it's not really cold. 我开着窗户睡觉,除非天气非常冷/如果天气不是很冷。

proper作形容词,意为“恰当的;正确的”。

4. Use serving chopsticks and spoons to take food from shared dishes. 使用公筷和公勺从共用菜肴中夹菜。
(1)serving chopsticks意为“公筷”。其中serving作形容词,意为“分菜用的”。
Use a serving spoon for the soup. 用汤勺盛汤。
(2)serving 还是serve的现在分词形式,意为“正在服务”,强调动作的进行状态。
The waiter is serving customers now. 服务员正在为顾客服务。
