Subject: Advice for Your Visit to the Zhaos
Hi Tina,
I’m so glad to get your email! Don’t be nervous—it’s easy to visit the Zhaos if you know some simple manners. I’ll tell you the advice you asked for.
First, about greetings. When you meet the Zhaos, greet Grandma Zhao first because she is older. You can say “Ni hao” with a smile and nod your head. A soft handshake is also fine. They will be happy to see your good manners.

Imagine you are Yaming. Write an email to Tina to give some advice.
About gifts, bringing a small present is a good idea, just like in America. You can take some fresh fruit, a box of tea, or small snacks from America—they will like knowing about your country’s food. Don’t give clocks. In Chinese, “clock” sounds like “end”, which brings bad luck.
Then there are table manners. Wait for Grandma Zhao or Mr. Zhao to start eating first. Don’t stick your chopsticks into the rice, and don’t point at others with them. If someone offers you food, say “Xiexie” and take it—it’s a way to show you’re grateful.

About conversation topics, you can talk about your trip to Shanghai, your hobbies or delicious food. The Zhaos will be interested in your life in America. Avoid asking about their salary, age or family’s private matters—those topics are not polite in China.
Don’t worry too much—your kindness will make a good first impression. I’m sure you will get on well with the Zhaos!
I’m looking forward to hearing about your visit soon!
Cheers,
Yaming

Join a different group. Tell them about your research.
We researched eating customs. In China, it’s not polite to talk with your mouth full. In Brazil, it’s rude to do that too. In China, we usually use chopsticks. But in Brazil, people use a knife and fork instead.
Also, in China, we always wait for elders to start eating first. But in Brazil, they often start eating together after everyone gets their food. And there are more small rules: in China, we don’t stick chopsticks into the rice. In Brazil, people don’t put their elbows on the table while eating.
So some table manners are the same (like not talking with a full mouth), but most are different because of our different habits!
