I. Teaching Objectives
1. Language Knowledge
Students will master core vocabulary related to free-time activities: programming, hiking, painting, playing the flute, doing calligraphy, skiing.
Students will understand and use key sentence patterns:
What do you usually do when you are free
How do you spend your free time
I like to... / I do it to...
It was difficult at first, but now it’s easier/more fun.
2. Language Skills
Students will be able to listen for specific information about people’s hobbies and purposes.
Students will conduct short oral interviews about free-time activities using target language.
Students will write simple sentences describing their own hobbies and reasons.
3. Affective Attitude
Students will develop a positive attitude toward trying new skills despite initial difficulties.
Students will recognize the value of persistence and not giving up easily when learning something new.
4. Cultural Awareness
Students will explore common leisure activities among teenagers in China and other countries.
Students will reflect on how free-time activities contribute to physical health, mental well-being, and social connection.
II. Key Points and Difficulties

Difficulties
Correctly using verb forms after “like” (like doing vs. like to do).
Expressing changes in difficulty or enjoyment over time (It was... but now it’s...).
Articulating personal reasons for choosing certain activities clearly in English.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins)
Show a photo of a girl flying a kite.
Ask: What is she doing Do you like this activity Why
Guide students to discuss why free-time activities are important (relaxation, health, making friends, etc.).
Step 2: Pre-listening (8 mins)
Present pictures of activities: playing the flute, doing calligraphy, painting, skiing, hiking, programming.
Match words with images (Activity 1a).
Introduce new vocabulary with pronunciation and meaning.
Step 3: While-listening (12 mins)
Listening 1b: Listen to three interviews; complete sentences about what Teng Fei, Helen, and Chen Jie do.
Listening 1c: Match each person’s activity with their purpose (to relax, to express feelings, to get exercise, to create an app).
Play audio again; students fill in blanks in dialogue transcripts (Interviews 1–3).
Highlight key structures: How do you spend... , I decided to give it a go., It was difficult at first...
Step 4: Post-listening & Speaking Practice (10 mins)
Pair work: Students interview each other using:
What do you do in your free time
Why do you do it
Was it difficult at first Is it easier now
Encourage use of target vocabulary and sentence frames.
Step 5: Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summarize key expressions and values learned.
Homework:
Must do: Write 5 sentences about your free-time activities and reasons.
Choose to do: Draw your favorite activity and write a short English description.
IV. Teaching Reflection
本节课围绕“课余时间活动”展开，内容贴近学生生活，易于激发兴趣。通过听、说、读、写多种活动，学生基本掌握了相关词汇和句型，并能简单表达自己的爱好及原因。四维目标中，语言知识与技能达成度较高；情感态度方面，学生在讨论“初学者困难”时表现出共鸣，有助于培养坚持精神；文化意识环节可通过补充国外青少年休闲方式进一步拓展。
不足之处：部分学生在区分“like doing”和“like to do”时仍有混淆，需在后续课时强化辨析；口语活动中，少数学生表达不够流畅，可增加小组互助或提供语言支架。整体而言，课堂节奏适中，任务层层递进，达到了预期教学效果。
