Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago.His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well.To make ends meet，his wife，Mrs Lim，had to take on an overseas job offer.This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children，Luke and Lisa，all by himself.Seeing their father being so unhappy every day，Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up.On the day of Mr Lim’s birthday，the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry，Luke! Dad will be home anytime now! Let’s hide to surprise him！” Lisa said.After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table，something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected，they hid under it.It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake.
They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose.Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall，intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party.Moments later，the main door creaked(嘎吱作响) open.Suddenly，a loud shout filled the air!
“Who messed up the wall on purpose？” Mr Lim shouted angrily.On hearing those words，Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock.As the elder brother，Luke knew he had to protect Lisa.Taking a deep breath，Luke slowly moved out from under the table.Before he could say a word，Mr Lim gave him an earful(长时间的斥责)．Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding，Luke said，“Dad，you’re wrong.We just wanted to...”
“Don’t you dare give me excuses！” Mr Lim raised his voice.Then，with great force，he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table.It hit the birthday cake，ruining it! Seeing that，Luke’s heart broke.He cried.
“Dad...we...we’re sorry! We wanted to give...give you a birthday sur...surprise，” Lisa explained in between cries，after moving out from her hiding spot.
