“I was in the ICU.I’d been told I’d be released the next day.The worst,it seemed, was behind me.” Jake Ryan didn’t know it at the time, but the worst was not totally behind him. After his open heart surgery,he was about to enter a different and difficult journey on the road to physical and emotional recovery.
Upon discharge(出院),the hospital gave Jake a “care package.” “I miss my 3-year-old twins.I remember thinking how much I wished there was a book in the package that would offer guidance for how to be a dad following surgery. There wasn’t,but it was out of that thought that this book was born.”
Dear Diary Franklin is a novel written in the voice of 11-year-old Hannah Brody, whose father had suddenly collapsed on a gym floor and was in need of serious medical attention. The book is written in diary format, which gets readers deep inside the head and heart of its young heroine.
Through her diary, readers hear about Hannah’s feelings and frustrations as she copes with the anger, fear and confusion of the impact of her father’s surgery. What are they keeping from me And why She repeatedly hears the catch-all cliché(陈词滥调) “everything is going to be fine” so many times that she can only think anything but her own translation:“Normal was over.” While her dad does his best to keep things as normal as possible, his recovery,as you’d imagine,is slow and his routine changes.Meanwhile, there’s the matter of school and Hannah’s place within what for some is a terrifying social universe—she has few friends.
While Ryan said his motivation was to help men (or parents in general) deal with the after-effects of major surgery in their families and themselves,he has delivered a valuable story for children and grown-ups alike in how to tackle a difficult life event that nobody can truly prepare you for.

Currently, people around the world are working on ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it,which is often called Direct Air Capture(DAC).DAC technology is still being developed. But normally during the process, air is pulled across a material that can remove carbon dioxide(CO2) from it.One common material is limestone(石灰石).Later, the material is heated to carefully release CO2 so it can be stored safely underground. But the current methods of doing this are expensive and don’t capture much CO2.
However,COF-999,a novel yellow powder, created by scientists at UC Berkeley,is a different story.Under a microscope,it looks like it’s made of tiny balls. Each tiny ball has an incredible number of holes in it.These holes allow air to pass through the balls.Attached to these balls are lots of “amines(胺)”.An amine is a special chemical mixture related to ammonia. The amines are great at grabbing CO2 molecules(分子) from the air and holding onto them.
To test COF-999,the scientists filled a small tube with the powder. They then piped air from outside their lab through the tube for 20 days. With CO2 in the air outside, however, the air from the tube had no carbon dioxide at all! The discovery was exciting for the scientists.“I see the solution to the climate problem right there,in our hands,” said one of the scientists,Dr.Omar Yaghi.
COF-999 captures CO2 10 times faster than other DAC materials. The researchers say that half a pound of the powder can pull as much CO2 from the air as a tree can.But unlike trees,COF-999 can capture CO2 even when it’s dark outside. To get COF-999 to release the carbon,it just needs heating to around 60℃,much cooler than most other DAC materials, meaning it will take less energy to collect the CO2.The materials needed to make COF-999 don’t cost much. Most importantly, the scientists have already tested re-using the material up to 300 times. They believe it could probably be reused thousands of times.
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了新型材料COF-999在直接空气捕集 DAC 技术中高效捕获二氧化碳的能力及其潜在的环境应用前景。
8.What is the disadvantage of the common DAC method
A.Its safety turns out unclear.
B.It’s costly and less effective.
C.Its materials are hard to obtain.
D.It’s complicated to carry out.
9.How does COF-999 work to process CO2
A.By converting it into ammonia.
B.By absorbing CO2 with amines.
C.By releasing it back into the air.
D.By resolving CO2 through holes.
10.What can be inferred from the COF-999’s test
A.DAC technology will be replaced soon.
B.More energy is consumed during the procedure.
C.CO2 is captured merely in the presence of sunlight.
D.A promising environmental prospect is on the way.
11.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Amines:Great Materials for Capturing CO2
B.The Importance of Removing CO2
C.COF-999:Game-Changer in CO2 Processing

The famous marshmallow test, where children are asked to choose one marshmallow now or two later, may reveal more than willpower.Recent research suggests the ability to delay gratification(满足) could help protect against cognitive(认知) decline. This skill strengthens the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning and reasoning.Just as regular physical exercise helps maintain muscle strength, regularly practising delayed gratification may help maintain cognitive functions throughout life.Over time,it will definitely build up mental resilience.
Resisting immediate rewards stimulates “cool” controlling strategies in the prefrontal cortex, while giving in to temptation involves emotional decision-making areas.Regular practice of these “cool” strategies contributes to cognitive reserve, which highlights the importance of mental stimulation. This regular practice will potentially delay cognitive decline. It’s not just about willpower, but the ability to plan for the future, which is essential to make healthier lifestyle choices that benefit brain health.
These skills can be developed at any age. While early childhood lays the foundation for delayed gratification, adults can strengthen self-control through consistent practice.Strategies like setting specific goals enhance these abilities.Studies show those who regularly practice self-control tend to maintain better cognitive functions as they age, demonstrating stronger problem-solving skills.
Physical activity matters in this relationship.Research shows that higher physical activity is linked to better cognitive function, especially in older adults.Delaying gratification helps maintain regular exercise habits, creating a positive feedback circle that supports brain health. The more we practice delayed gratification, the more we strengthen our brain’s ability of self-control and protect against future cognitive decline.
To develop these skills, start with small delays and gradually increase the waiting period.Set achievable goals and practice mindfulness to manage emotional urges. It’s never too late to start building cognitive resilience, and the small choices we make today can have a lasting impact on our mental health in the long term.

Supporting someone emotionally feels like walking a tightrope. 1 Here are some practical ways.
Ask specific questions. When offering emotional support, asking questions is a good start. But “How can I support you?” isn’t always the best.People may not know what they want or need, especially in tough situations. 2 For example,“I know he gave you a hard time. How have you been holding up?”
Be a good listener. 3 Listening actively,or sympathetically,is another important part of providing emotional support. When you really listen to someone, you give them your full attention.Being a good listener shows others you care about what they’re going through. For someone who’s struggling, knowing that someone else has heard their pain can make a big difference.
4 You might think you’re helping someone by telling them how to fix a problem. But generally speaking, people don’t want advice unless they request it.If they’ve moved from “complaining” to “talking through the problem”,use reflective questions to help them find solutions on their own.You might, for instance, say something like:“Have you been in a situation like this before What helped then?”
Avoid judgment.Nobody likes being judged. Those in a tough situation due to their actions may already be self-judging.When seeking support, people don’t want criticism, even well-intentioned constructive criticism.Avoid asking questions that seem blaming or judgmental, like “So what made them so mad at you?” Even without direct judgment, tone can show emotion.Make sure your voice doesn’t sound disapproving. 5
A.Skip the advice.
B.Advise or fix the problem.
C.Ask tailored questions instead.
D.Asking questions isn’t enough.
E.Focus on sympathy when speaking.
F.Many struggle to find the right balance.
G.It can improve anyone’s outlook and wellness.

3.答案 D
解析 根据上一段以及下文“Listening actively,or sympathetically,is another important part of providing emotional support.”可知,上文强调了提问,下文强调了倾听也是很重要的,所以此处应该是说仅仅提问是不够的。D项符合语境,能够很好地连接上下文。故选D。
4.答案 A
解析 根据下文“You might think you’re helping someone by telling them how to fix a problem. But generally speaking, people don’t want advice unless they request it.”可知,本段主要讲的是在提供情感支持时,不要轻易给别人建议,除非别人要求,也就是要避免提建议。A项能够很好地概括本段的主旨。故选A。
5.答案 E
解析 根据上文“...Even without direct judgment, tone can show emotion.Make sure your voice doesn’t sound disapproving.”可知,本段主要讲的是在与需要情感支持的人交流时要避免评判,注意语气。E项符合语境,强调了在交流时要表达出同情,而不是评判,与上文内容相呼应。故选E。
