Watch a video
What does the video talk about
How do you save yourself?
James in the story had a cooking accident too—Let’s see what happened.
1a. Discuss the questions.
1. Look at the picture in 1b. Can you describe what is happening
In the picture, there’s a scene happened in the kitchen. Two people are by the stove. The pan on the stove is on fire, with big flames coming out. One person looks panicked, and the other seems to be reacting to the fire—maybe trying to figure out how to put it out or escape the danger.
1a Discuss the questions.
2. Do you know what to do if oil catches fair
If oil catches fire:
Turn off the stove first.
Don’t use water! Water can make oil fires spread or get worse.
Cover the pan with a lid to cut off oxygen.
We can also use fire extinguishers to put out the fire safely.
Read this story quickly and match.

The end
Read this story carefully and answer the questions.
James lived in the city with his friend Allen. It was their first time living away from their families, and they enjoyed learning how to do many things themselves.
One Saturday, James decided to make fried chicken. First, he poured oil into a pan. Then he turned on the stove and left the oil to heat while he prepared the chicken. Just then, he heard the front door open, followed by the sound of Allen singing.
“Guess what,” Allen called out happily. “We won!”
A Cooking Accident
Who is Allen
What food did James decide to make
James’s friend who lived in the city with James.
James decided to make fried chicken.
“No way!” James followed him into the living room. He wanted to hear all about the football game! Suddenly, Allen stopped talking and looked up.
“Hey, do you smell something burning ”
“Oh no!”
They both rushed back into the kitchen. The pan was on fire! Large flames were jumping into the air. In a panic, James turned off the stove at once. But he was so close to the pan that a flame jumped onto his shirt. James cried out and threw himself to the floor. He put out the fire by rolling on the ground, but the pan was still burning!
“Get water, quick!" he shouted.
Did a flame jump onto down James’ shirt
Yes, it did.
Allen was about to do so when he stopped short. Thanks to the first aid and safety classes he took at school, he knew that water could make oil fires much worse! Instead, he rushed to get the fire extinguisher. In seconds, the fire in the burning pan was put out.
“Are you OK ” Allen asked his friend.
“I think so,” James said. It was lucky that his shirt wasn’t too thin! His arm was red, but it didn’t hurt very much.
“Maybe we should eat out tonight,” James said as he ran cool water over his arm.
“Sure, we could do that. What do you want ”
“Anything but fried chicken,” he said sadly.
How did Allen put out the fire
Alan used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
Did they eat fried chicken at last
No, they didn’t.
1b Read the story and find out how the fire started.
The fire started when James poured oil into a pan, turned on the stove, and left the oil to heat while he prepared the chicken. Then he heard the front door open and Allen singing, so he followed Allen into the living room and forgot about the oil heating on the stove. As a result, the oil overheated and the pan caught fire.

James made a mistake by leaving the oil heating, but he reacted quickly to turn off the stove and tried to put out the fire (even if rolling on the ground was a bit panicked). from time to time.
防火安全无小事,
时时处处需留心。
1. It was their first time living away from their families, and they enjoyed learning how to do many things themselves.
“It was one’s first time (in) doing sth.” 是常用结构,意为 “这是某人第一次做某事。” ,其中“living away from their families” 是动名词短语作后置定语;“enjoy doing sth” 表示 “喜欢做某事” ;“how to do many things themselves” 是 “疑问词 + 不定式” 结构作“ learning”的宾语 。

“In a panic” 作状语,描述状态;“turned off” 意为 “关闭”;“so... that... ” 引导结果状语从句,意为 “如此…… 以至于……” ,说明 James 距离锅太近导致火苗溅到衬衫上的结果 。
常见例句:

慌乱中,她迅速关上了门。但她太紧张了,以至于把钥 匙落在了里面 。
