Information
Each book club is hosted by a library staff member, and we are joined by an expert on the book (never the author) to help guide the chat. Before each club we’ll put three “thinking points” to consider while you’re reading the book. The book club is about you, and everyone is welcome and encouraged to contribute but it’s fine to listen in, too. If you want to make a point, give us a wave and we’ll come to you. Alternatively type it into the online chat function. If it’s your first time at the club, don’t worry, we’ll run through all this at the start.
You don’t have to have read the book to come to book club, but beware — there will be spoilers!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with just a step. Sure. But what about 2,200 miles across 14 states, which is equal to climbing up and down the Mount Qomolangma 16 times
Sound unachievable Not for Betty Kellenberger. At 80 years old, she recently became the oldest woman to ever hike the entire Appalachian Trail. According to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, around 3,000 to 4,000 attempt to hike the entire trail each year, yet fewer than 25 percent make it the distance.
Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell, Michigan, where her interest in the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail from Georgia to Maine, but having a teaching career never allowed her the six months it required. Having retired, she finally realized that nothing was holding her back— so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime.
The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced dehydration, an injury from a fall, and even Lyme disease. Her hike was also held up by Hurricane Helene, which tore through the eastern United States and forced her to pause at the southern Virginia border. Determined to finish, she re-routed north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s poor land conditions until the very end.
As she neared completion, word began spreading that she was on track to break a record held by Linda Vanderloop, who had completed her hike at age 74. But for Kellenberger, this was never about titles. “You have to plant your feet, look at the view and then move forward every step,” she explained.
Now, having completed one tough challenge, Kellenberger says the hike has her in the best shape of her life. Looking back on her journey, she offered a bit of wisdom for anyone chasing a dream. “This life is a journey. And it may be a series of little journeys. Or maybe just the whole life is a journey,” she said. “And the bigger your efforts, the greater the reward.”
4. How does the author introduce hiking Appalachian Trail in paragraphs 1 and 2
A. By giving examples. B. By providing data.
C. By stressing age limits. D. By quoting expert views.
5. Why did Betty fail to hike the Appalachian Trail before 2024
A. She suffered from fitness problems. B. She struggled with economic issues.
C. She lacked the relevant hiking skills. D. She was held back by her career duties.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. What challenges Betty faced. B. How the hike affected Betty.
C. Why Betty delayed the adventure. D. Where Betty focused her attention.
7. What is Betty’s opinion about the hike
A. It helped her reconnect with nature.
B. It enabled her to break a world record.
C. It was a spiritual journey of self-reflection.
D. It offered her a chance to escape from society.

Writing is simple, but it moves the brain in a strong way. When we send a quick text or keep a small diary, we let feelings out and then step back to look at them. This move — from too much feeling to clear thought — is a basic form of resilience (心理韧性).
Resilience is often called a skill we can grow with hard work. Psychologists say it is the steps we take to face trouble, while news stories cheer people who win against pain by never giving up. The wellness trade also tells us that always trying to be better will give us this power. Yet these loud ideas may miss the quiet help we get from simple acts like writing.
Studies show that writing helps us deal with hard moments. In the 1980s, doctor James Pennebaker gave the world expressive writing, a way that asks people to write about upset events. When we put pain into words, we drop some of the weight inside and build a small safe place. Writing lets the brain treat sad memories.
This power comes from how the brain does its job. Writing asks us to bring back memories, line up thoughts, and turn them into clear words. These steps light up parts that hold memory, make choices, and move the hand. Because of this, writing helps short-term memories lock in place, so they feel steady (稳定的) and easy to find later. This joining lets us look at the past in a new way and calm our feelings.
Brain imaging studies also show that writing down feelings quiets the amygdala (杏仁核), the spot that fires up fear, and wakes the prefrontal cortex (大脑皮层), the spot that plans and solves. Even a small job like writing a to-do list can bring back focus by using these same brain parts.
Writing also helps us find sense in life. It is not just a tool to talk to others; it is a way to think that builds who we are. While loud tales often paint resilience as rare and great, daily writing acts — from a warm message to a sticky note — prove that we build the resilience in quiet, common steps of fitting in and moving on.
8. What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A. A common meaning of resilience. B. The limit of popular views on resilience.
C. How writing helps us grow. D. The media’s praise for determined individuals.
9 How does expressive writing help people
A. By removing painful memories completely. B. By encouraging people to avoid difficulties.
C. By furthering constant self-improvement. D. By making stressful events easier to handle.
10. What is the function of writing in terms of brain processes
A. It prevents the amygdala from being activated.
B. It changes short memories into steady ones.
C. It values emotional feelings over logical thinking.
D. It separates decision-making from movement control.
11. What does the author stress about resilience in the last paragraph
A. It can be developed in common daily practices. B. It is mainly built through personal stories.
C. It depends on professional methods. D. It is a quality for overcoming difficulties.
D
There was a time, not so long ago, when kids built castles, climbed trees, and rode bikes until dark. These outdoor adventures have not disappeared. They are just waiting to be rediscovered beyond screens.
While technology offers many benefits, the trend of children having smartphones may change how they develop, play, and connect. Much of the technology that kids are using is designed to be addictive. Overmuch smartphone use is also linked to anxiety, attention problems, and sleep issues, according to the UK-based organization Smartphone Free Childhood, which was founded in 2024 and includes more than 350,000 parents.
Smartphone Free Childhood stresses that smartphones were not designed with kids in mind yet have reshaped childhood nearly overnight. In fact, 89 percent of 12-year-old British kids own a smartphone and the average age of receiving one’s first phone is 9. To counter this storm, the Smartphone Free Childhood launched a parent agreement in Oxfordshire, where parents of around 4,000 children promised not to give their kids smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade.
The goal of this group is teamwork—when everyone waits, no child feels left out. In one school in Oxfordshire, students lock their phones away during the day, and teachers report calmer classrooms. “People used to get sad and angry because of something on their phone. But now their presence of mind is in school and they can study better,” a student at a smartphone-free school said.
A childhood without smartphones is not about going backwards; it reconnects children to the magic of this early time in their lives. Children experience fun riding their bikes, feel a thrill playing a game on the spot, and learn about quiet focus when creating something with their hands. These are all smartphone-free experiences that develop creativity, confidence, and connection.
By joining together, parents and communities are making it easier for the next generation to grow up grounded in real life rather than through a screen, and they are creating a cultural shift where outdoor play, face-to-face friendships, and presence are valued again.
12. What can be implied from paragraph 1
A. Screens have replaced all outdoor games.
B. Smartphones attract most of kids’ attention.
C. Parents need to force children to play outdoors.
D. Schools should stop all forms of digital activities.
13. What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Fight against. B. Give in to. C. Take advantage of. D. Speed up.
14. What is the goal of Smartphone Free Childhood
A. To promote kid-friendly smartphones. B. To encourage parents to quit phone use.
C. To ensure kids use phones only for learning. D. To put off children’s access to smartphones.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of Smartphones in Schools B. How to Avoid Kids’ Addiction to Phones
C. Rediscovering Childhood Beyond Screens D. Why Smartphones Should Be Banned Forever

Ten-year-old Josh came from a poor family. His mother was a part-time cleaner and his father fixed small appliances for his neighbors. Though the family’s clothes were faded and patched (打补丁的), and the rent was a constant worry at the end of the month, Josh’s parents always taught him that honesty cost nothing but was worth everything.
One afternoon, Josh walked his bike to old Mr. Black’s repair shop. The chain was broken again, and Mr. Black, who was familiar with their struggles — charged only two dollars for the repair. Before Josh left, Mr. Black warned that the frame was nearly worn out. Josh thanked him and promised to ride carefully.
On the way home, Josh discovered something at the bus stop — a thick envelope half-buried in snow. He picked it up and took a look inside. His eyes widened. It was full of cash, more money than he’d ever seen: Hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.
His first thought was about his mother’s worn-out shoes and the rent that was due. He could slip the envelope into his jacket, and no one would know. But then he remembered his father’s words: “We might be poor, Josh, but we must be honest.” His heart raced as he weighed the wrong that was easy against the right that was hard. Then he sat down on the frozen bench, holding the envelope tightly, and waited.
An hour passed, then two. Josh’s toes grew numb (麻木的) as the setting sun painted the sky orange and pink. Occasionally, strangers walked by, eyeing him curiously, but he just held the envelope tighter. A woman asked if he was okay, but he simply shook his head and stayed put. His nose was red from cold, and he shivered uncontrollably, but he didn’t move. Finally, just as Josh began to worry about his parents’ concern, a black car stopped. Then a man named Eason in a suit jumped out, urgently scanning (察看) the ground.

(1)续写词数应150个左右;

Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something.
