The oldest shadow puppet plays in China date back over 1,000 years. In shadow puppet plays, light and shadows are used to tell a story on a screen.This art form is probably one of the earliest forms of moving images. It has had a huge influence on modern film-making and animation. However, this ancient folk art is at risk of dying out, so local artists are trying to save it.

Shadow puppets were first made of paper. Later, people used leather to make them.That is why they are called piying (i.e. “leather shadows”) in Chinese. One of the advantages of using leather is that the puppets last for a long time.The leather is cut in the shape of people, animals or objects. Each puppet is painted in different colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have movable parts like arms and legs, or even fingers and eyes.

Created by the Wan brothers in Shanghai in 1941, Princess Iron Fan
was the first feature-length animated film in China, as well as the first
