This is the passive voice.
Activity 2: Read and analyze
Read the text below. Pay attention to the use of the passive voice.
A young boy was blinded in a car accident in January this year. Two months later, he was cured by Orbis doctors. In addition to helping patients directly, Orbis does many other things. For example, local doctors and nurses are trained by Orbis so that they can better help patients. With the help of Orbis and its volunteers, the lives of many patients with eye problems all over the world are improved.
We use the active voice when it is important to know who performs the action. When do we use the passive voice Look at the sentences carefully and discuss in groups. Then tell me what you find.
Activity 2: Read and analyze
We use the passive voice when:
it is obvious who performs the action
(动作的执行者是泛指或者不言自明时);
we do not know or do not need to know who performs the action
(在不知道或没必要知道动作的执行者是谁时);
the action is more important than the person who performs the action
(需要强调动作的承受者时).
We can also introduce who or what performs the action in the passive voice using “by”.
On the plane, operations are done by volunteer doctors.
Many blind people are helped by Orbis doctors.

Activity 6: Discuss and write
Discuss a charity activity you know or have participated in in groups. Then write a short text(5~8 sentences). Use the passive voice and the word “by” if appropriate.

A School Charity Sale
Last month, a charity sale was held by our school in the playground. Many old books, toys and stationery were collected by the students before the sale. All these things were sold at low prices by us to raise money. The money we got was donated to the children in a poor mountain village. Some new schoolbags and books were bought for them with the money. I was very happy to take part in this activity. I learned that small kindnesses can bring great warmth to others.
