What has happened in China since 1997
China has some of the largest deserts in the world, but it has made great progress in fighting desertification. Its desert area is reduced by thousands of square kilometres each year, and about 80% of the Mu Us Desert is now green.
In 1997, China joined the UNCCD. Since then, it has reduced its desert area by thousands of square kilometres each year. For example, massive tree planting in the Mu Us Desert has turned about 80% of it green.
