Listening Script
Ella: What’s wrong, Peter You look worried.
Peter: Harry and I got into a fight a few days ago. Now he’s not
speaking to me.
Ella: What happened
Peter: He borrowed my guitar. But there was an ugly mark on the
guitar when he returned it.
Ella: Oh no!
Peter: I was upset, but he didn’t care. He even said, “It’s just an old
guitar.” But it’s very special to me. It was from my grandfather.
Ella: That wasn’t nice.
Peter: I was angry and said things that hurt him. I feel awful
now.
Ella: It’s hard to control our anger sometimes. Although he was
wrong, you hurt him too. If you want to say sorry, you
could call him.
Peter: I want to, but I’m afraid he’s still angry.
Ella: Well, maybe you could send him a text message first.
Peter: Good idea.

Retell
Peter and Harry are good friends, but they recently had a big argument. It all started when Harry borrowed Peter's guitar. When Harry returned the guitar, Peter found ...
Answer the questions based on the listening.
1. What did Harry think of the guitar Why didn’t he care
about the mark
Harry thought it was just an old guitar. He didn’t care about the mark because he didn’t know how special it was to Peter. He probably saw it as a not very valuable object, so a small mark didn’t seem important to him.
2. Why is the guitar special to Peter Do you think his anger
was understandable
The guitar is special to Peter because it was from his grandfather. It has emotional value, not just material value. I think his anger was understandable because Harry not only damaged something precious to him, but also didn’t apologize or show any care about it.
Brainstorm
If you were Ella, what advice would you give to Peter
Explain to Harry why the guitar is special, then ask him to help fix the ugly mark.
Send Harry a text to tell him you’re sorry for saying those hurtful words, but the ugly mark really makes you feel uncomfortable.
...
Further Thinking
Harry’s Thoughts
It’s just an old guitar. He shouldn’t get so angry at me, or
say those hurtful words.
Peter’s Thoughts
This guitar is so special to me. Harry should have been
more careful! I just lost it when I saw that ugly mark.
If you could talk to Harry right now, what would you say to help him understand Peter better Share your ideas!
I would say, “Hey, Harry, this guitar might seem old to you, but it’s really special to Peter. It has important memories and meanings for him.
When he borrowed it to you, he trusted you a lot. If you unedrstand how much the guitar means to him, you’ll know he was just hurt.
1d
Role-play a conversation between Peter and Ella. Give Peter more advice.
A: If you did something wrong, maybe you should say sorry
first.
B: I guess I could do that. But I don't know how.
A: You could ...
Sample Conversation
A: If you did something wrong, maybe you should say sorry first. B: I guess I could do that. But I don't know how.
A: You could start by telling him you miss your friendship. Then,
explain why you got so angry — not as an excuse, but to help
him understand how much the guitar means to you.
B: That makes sense. But what if he's still upset
A: Give him some time. Maybe invite him to do something fun
together, like playing video games or watching a movie.
Sometimes, doing things together can help fix a friendship
better than just talking.
B: That's a great idea! Thanks for your advice.
A: No problem. Good luck!
Language Points
1. Harry and I got into a fight a few days ago.
get into a fight是一个常用的英文短语,意思是“陷入争吵;打架”。在本文中指“陷入争吵”。
E.g. They got into a fight over the broken bike.(争吵)
If you keep arguing, you two might get into a fight.(打架)
2. I was upset, but he didn’t care.
upset adj. 难过的;沮丧的
E.g. She was upset because she failed the exam.
The news about his pet's illness made him very upset.
3. It’s hard to control our anger sometimes.
control v.&n. 控制
E.g. You should learn to control your temper(脾气) so as
not to hurt those around you. (v.)
He has excellent control over his emotions even in difficult situations. (n.)
anger n. 怒火
E.g. Tom couldn't hide his anger when he saw the broken
model plane.
She took a few deep breaths to calm her anger before talking to her brother about the mistake.
4. Although he was wrong, you hurt him too.
虽然这句话翻译为“虽然他有错,但是你也伤害了他。”但是,在英语中,although和but不能连用。因为although是从属连词,本身已经包含转折的关系,再加but则重复。
E.g. Although the weather was cold and rainy, we still
decided to go hiking in the mountains.
Although she felt a little tired, she still helped her mom clean the house after school.
