Here’s a video to help us get the answers!
Read the conversation and underline the three rivers mentioned.
Yaming: Welcome back, Ella! How was your trip
Ella: It was great! We saw the Hukou Waterfall on the
Yellow River. Is that the longest river in China
Yaming: No,the Yangtze River is the longest river in China. It
travels the farthest and is about 6,300 kilometres long.
The Yellow River is 5,464 kilometres long and is the
second longest. By the way, do you know why it's
called the Yellow River
Ella: Because it's yellow
3a
Yaming: Right. Some parts of the river carry brown and yellow earth.
Ella: That’s interesting! I like learning about rivers. My favourite
is the Nile. Did you know it's the longest river in the world
Yaming: Yes, it's 6,671 kilometres long. It's very important in
Egypt's history.
Ella: That's right. Both the Nile and the Yellow River helped
ancient civilizations to develop. And they're still very
important today.
Yaming: Yes. In China, we even called the Yellow River our
"mother river"!
Ella: We should protect them at all costs.

Further Thinking
How do you think the rivers helped ancient civilizations to develop
Water Supply: Rivers provided fresh drinking water for people,
their farm animals, and the plants they grew.
Transportation and Trade: Rivers acted as natural "roads" for boats. Ancient civilizations used rivers to move goods and people easily, which helped trade and communication between different areas.
Settlement(定居): The reliable food and water allowed people to stop being nomads(游牧民) and settle down in one place. This led to the growth of villages, which later became large cities.
Why are rivers still very important today Give examples to support your opinions.
Provide drinking water: Many cities get clean water from rivers. For example, the Yangtze River supplies water to over 400 million people in China.
Help agriculture: Rivers offer water for irrigating farms. Like the Mississippi River in the US, which waters fields growing corn and soybeans.
Creating Electricity: Dams(水坝)are built on rivers to create hydropower. The flowing water spins turbines(水带动涡轮机旋转) to generate electricity for homes, schools, and factories.
...
What could we do to protect rivers
stop dumping waste into rivers
reduce chemical use
plant trees along river banks
Listen to the conversation. Then role-play it.
While listening, you should focus on how they speak:
Notice their tone (e.g. friendly, encouraging, proud...).
Identify their emotions (e.g. excitement, hesitation, confidence...).
Pay attention to pauses and emphasis on certain words.

Think and Share
From what aspects can we decribe a natural wonder?
Basic Information: Include its name, location (country, city, or region), and whether it’s famous locally/globally.
Physical Features: Talk about its shape, size (length, height, area), color, or unique natural forms (e.g., rocks, lakes, waterfalls).
Cultural/Historical Significance:Talk about its role in local culture, history, or people’s lives.
Human Connections: Share how people interact with it (e.g., tourism, protection efforts, daily use like drinking water).
Pair Work
Imagine that you are Yaming or Ella. Continue the conversation with a partner about other geographical features in China.
Ella: Could you tell me more about China,Yaming
Yaming: Sure! What would you like to know
Ella: What's the biggest desert in China
Yaming: It's the Taklimakan Desert.
Ella: Do you know ...
3d
Taklimakan Desert
It’s in Xinjiang, China.
It is the largest desert in China.
It’s about 337,600 square kilometers.
It is very dry there, with little rain. But around its edges, there are small oases (green places with water) where people live and grow crops.
Sample Conversation

about 337,600 square kilometers.
